In today’s episode, we travel deep into the Japanese countryside, where an elderly craftsman with decades of wisdom in his hands builds something extraordinary — a Japanese round cabin inspired by traditional yurts but elevated with modern engineering. And because no true craftsman is complete without his tools, he adds a container workshop beside it — a space dedicated to creativity and precision.
The project begins humbly, right on the grass, as the old man traces a flawless circle that will define the cabin’s foundation. He digs holes, inserts wooden posts and rebar clusters, and fills them with concrete to create solid footings. This clever elevated design keeps moisture, insects, and decay far away from the wooden base. While the concrete cures, he turns his attention to the workshop, where he constructs the compression ring — or “toono,” the crown of the structure that will support the rafters. Built from laminated wooden segments rather than bent wood, this ring acts as the architectural keystone that distributes weight evenly across the circular roof.
The floor platform follows — a masterpiece of geometry and craftsmanship. Using 2x4 framing and plywood cut into pie-shaped wedges, he builds a sturdy, insulated platform that fits together with millimeter precision. Prefabricated wall panels rise next, forming a curved perimeter with pre-cut openings for doors and windows. Each stud is shaped to follow the circle’s arc, proving that craftsmanship is about patience, not speed.
Once the walls are secured, the rafters stretch from the compression ring to the perimeter plate, closing in the dome-like roof with mathematical perfection. The exterior is then wrapped in black moisture-resistant sheeting and finished with custom shingles fan-laid along the roof’s curve.

Bochi-Hut’s design pays tribute to ancient yurts but replaces felt coverings with a sealed, durable wooden shell. Plumbing and electrics are carefully integrated — with PEX tubing, custom wooden countertops, and perfectly aligned cabinetry curving with the walls. Even doors and furniture are handmade to match the cabin’s radial form, maintaining visual harmony.
The finishing touches include a fire-safe chimney, a fiberglass mosquito mesh door, and an off-grid water system powered by an independent pump. Every detail — from the hand-shaped rafters to the curved storage shelves — reflects one man’s vision of blending ancient wisdom with modern innovation.
