We tend to measure a healthcare system by its shiniest machines — the MRI, the super-specialist, the gleaming hospital wing. But here's the thing: the countries with the best health outcomes aren't the ones with the most high-tech hospitals. They're the ones with strong primary care.
In this video, my colleague Dr. Frank Sullivan and I make the case for why primary care deserves more research attention — better outcomes, more equity, lower costs — and look at what was already changing when this video was made back in 2016: from Canadian studies cutting unnecessary antibiotic use, to frontline clinics becoming "living laboratories".
While 10 years have passed, and new strides have been made, the importance of primary care remains as strong as ever. Food for thought. Thanks for watching!
