Over the course of several months between late 2014 and September 2015, Penn Rail Videos made a sincere effort to get trackside along the former Delaware & Hudson Railway, owned by Canadian Pacific. This video shows all the footage we have in the final year of operations on the former D&H.
The operations on the D&H in Northeastern Pennsylvania, offered us something different from the usual operations of Southeastern Pennsylvania. It was nice to see bright red, and occasion blue & white, among the blue and yellows of CSX, and the black and white horseheads of Norfolk Southern. Ironically, most of the trains featured in this video are the NS run-through trains that operate on the CP Sunbury Sub. However, we do see some red, and visit a few iconic locations.
Nov. 7th, 2014 - We'll start in November 2014, as the Taylor Yard local D11 grinds up the grade in Yatesville, PA behind CP 7310, a lone GP38-2.
Jan. 9th, 2015 - On a snowy day, we are along the D&H and manage to see quite a bit of traffic. First, we catch CP train 259 heading north through Taylor, PA. Later in the day, we catch a UP leader on CP 930 as it heads south through Yatesville past the old D&H signal mast.
March 13th & 14th, 2015 - Spending St. Patrick's Day Weekend in the Scranton area, we catch a few trains in the mix. First on March 13th, CP 459 heads north out of Scranton past the D&H signal mast. On March 14th, we catch CP 458 heading south into Scranton, with D&H GP38-2 #7303 trailing as the fifth engine.
June 5th, 2015 - We catch CP 458 earlier in the day this time, with an SD70 leading the way past Oak St. in Pittston, PA.
June 26th, 2015 - The famous Tunkhannock Viaduct is a landmark structure on this line, and our goal on this day was to capture a train going across it. We did just that in the form of CP 259, who had combined with the local D11, to make one big train headed north for Binghamton, NY. What a sight that train is crossing the "Eighth Wonder of the World". We chase the 259 up to New Milford, PA. Later that day, we catch CP 930 headed south with CN power on the point through Avoca, PA.
Sept. 28th, 2012 - Now we threw this grab shot in here, since we've never posted it before. And since the D&H will be no more in Pennsylvania, we decided to share this neat little clip with all of our loyal viewers and subscribers.
We bid farewell to Canadian Pacific, thanks for the years of great railroad action in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Norfolk Southern has purchased the line from CP, and is already making changes to suit their needs. While the negatives will be no more bright red Geeps hauling locals, the positives are that railroading in the Northeast may be revitalized with the help of NS, with new business, traffic, and hopefully, more trains.
