“The Maid of Culmore!” This traditional Irish folk song about lost love may originate in the late 1800s. Culmore is located where the River Foyle broadens in the Lough Foyle, just north of Derry in Northern Ireland. Culmore was an emigration departure point.
From sweet lovely Derry to fair London town
There is no better harbor anywhere to be found
Where the children each evening go down to the shore
And the joy bells are ringing for the maid of Culmore
To the far lands of America, my love I’ll go see
It is there I know no one and no one knows me
And if I do not find her, I’ll return home no more
Like an eagle I’ll wander for the maid of Culmore
