I created this song “Bundo Matir” as a prayer to ancestral mother deities. This layered song was created in the proto-Celtic language, a partially reconstructed language which was spoken in the Bronze Age (about 4,000+ years ago). The words translate to: “Ground/Earth Mother, Death Mother, Shining Mother, Wisdom Mother” and “Praise, praise, praise.”
Most of us have experienced some kind of disconnection or loss of ancestral deities. This can be for a variety of reasons- from colonization to migrations of various kinds, forced conversion and more. Even if we’ve lost the names of the dear ancestral spirits we wish to be in relationship with, we can still find ways to recognize and name them again. I personally do this work of renaming, feeding and thanking these spirits through the vehicle of song.
