Here's my jazz tenor saxophone cover of the Magus Battle Theme from Chrono Trigger! I'm Sab and I love jazz and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!
The black wind howls.
This is definitely one of my favorite covers I've done! It's the most metal sounding one too because of the style of the drums.
When I wanted to cover a Chrono Trigger battle theme, this one stuck out to me the most. Magus is such an interesting character and definitely one of my favorites in the game. He is so intricate and his battle theme is so epic! It's also an added bonus it's in phyrgian, which is one of my favorite modes.
There were so many layers to this one and I really wanted to reflect the atmosphere of tune with more than just the arrangement and the audio. So I decided to record outside again, like a lot of my Chrono Trigger videos, but this time at night. When you battle Magus, it's in a dark room and you hear the black winds howl before the battle begins. And you may not hear the black winds howl, but you can definitely see them in some shots of the video!
I'm really happy with how this came out because it really reflects the emotions in the original battle theme. I really want to be able to recreate the emotions and atmosphere in these Chrono Trigger tunes because the music really does set the scenes in this game better than others.

Were finally here. Its been a long journey, but I have officially finished my first album. Im so glad this is my first album because Chrono Trigger means the most to me. It quickly became my favorite video game and I knew I had to cover the music from it while playing through the game.
Corridors of Time is a very special track. It took me a long time to come up with the idea for the arrangement. I used to think the cover I did before was amazing, but I realized that it really wasnt. As I played through the game and listened to others versions, I realized that I gave it the wrong emotions.
I wanted to make this cover really special, so I included lyrics from the amazing Laura Shigihara and added some choir parts on top the saxophone melody. The arrangement sounded bare without the choir part, so Im glad I added it. It was however, a massive challenge. My voice range is small so it really pushed me to get low and high notes, maintain pitch, and blend with the saxophones. And thats all before the mixing process.
I also changed the key for this one because I think it better captured the emotions I was going for. The track name for this is Suspicious Dreamscape, and I think that I achieved the emotions of that. Corridors of Time is a beautiful track, but there is something unsettling about the nature of the Kingdom of Zeal.

I cant believe were already a quarter of the way through the year. Most of my plans for this year were thrown out the window a few weeks into the year, but its all good! Stuff happens, and we move on!
When I was trying to think of music for April, I thought about the phrase April showers brings May flowers. A pretty common expression Ive heard since I was a child. And so I thought about making a track inspired by the rain. I wanted to try doing some sound design with water and droplet sounds for the percussion, but it didnt quite work out. However, theres many ways to convey the feeling of rain!
After I tracked the main piano part, I thought about other elements that would feel like rain. I didnt want too many layers muddying this up. I wanted it to be a very clean sound.
I utilized transient shapers in this track a lot to give some softer sounds a harsher attack, which made them sound plucky like rain drops falling. I did a simple electric piano part on the offbeats, almost acting like a drone to emulate the pitter patter of rain, an idea I got after reading a comment on my Forest Feels video!
My favorite trick I pulled out for this one, was absolutely reverse sounds. Reversed instruments have such a unique texture that I always enjoy! So I took an electronic sound and reversed it. It reminded me of the moment before a raindrop hits the pavement and ripples.
The biggest challenge for me was the drums, honestly. I started with a loop, replaced it with samples, but it just didnt sit right with me. I felt a little stuck since the routing for my electronic drums is a bit messy compared to my acoustic routing with Superior Drummer 3. And then I remembered I could still use my acoustic kit and achieve the lo-fi sound I wanted through production! EQ and RC-20 were definitely my friends when mixing the drums for this one haha.
As for the video, I actually filmed with LOG settings for the first time! Its something Ive seen a lot of my friends do over the years and have always wanted to try. Ive had a camera with the capability for a few years now, but never knew how to change until recently. I think filming with the log settings gave me the perfect starting point for having a cloudy, grey look to represent rainy days.
And the rain particles helped too! I havent used these in City of Tears, and Ive definitely learned a lot more about particle placement and coloring since then. It was really nice to stretch my creative muscles with this one in most areas!

I definitely have a knack for coming up with titles right before I have to render out the final video haha.
This tune was definitely all about experimentation with different sounds and instruments I donโt work with. I found myself using a lot of the same type of sounds on compositions Iโve been working on for a personal project. And I really wanted to see what I could do with sounds I wasnโt as familiar with.
I definitely donโt do electronic stuff that much, so it was really fun to push and see how my composition style differed with writing lines compared to the more RnB and chiptune oriented tracks I do.
The real challenge was in the mixing since its so different from what I normally do. It was fun to play with textural elements more to really support and bolster the track!
I was really inspired by aivis newest album tiger & water when writing this track. I struggle a lot with drums in my music and hearing the drums in some of aivis tracks reminded me that drums dont have to be complicated to be effective.

Im learning more often than not this year, my compositions happen on a complete whim. It used to be Id have a rough idea of what Id want to write a track for or Id go to the piano with the intention of composing. However, this track did not fall into either of those scenarios. I was actually on a phone call, turned on the piano, and played the first 2 measures of this track as a warm up for a practice session. And I just thought it sounded so cool, I hung up the phone call, and immediately recorded a voice memo with the rough structure of the tune.
The next day, I was back at the piano, and did a formal recording in my DAW. This tune was definitely inspired by aivi and surasshus album Meanwhile as Ive been listening to it the past few months. I had been using it as a reference for a client, but it was still in my head weeks after the fact! Wind Rider, the opening track was definitely a big inspiration for the instrumentation of this track.
I just love the feeling of running towards something exciting. After sketching the track, the title Chasing the Future just made sense. It really felt like it was capturing that kind of feeling. The future can often be scary and daunting, but it can also be really exhilarating to jump into the unknown! I wanted this composition to speak more to the ladder.
As for the video, this track is so piano heavy, I wanted to utilize the different keyboards I have available to me. It allowed me to get various angles and perspectives that I cant achieve with my primary piano. And after all the Noodles of a Game Dreamer videos, Ive been inspired to take my filming to another level. To be a lot more deliberate with how I frame and light shots and take the extra time to adjust between shots. The colored lights were a bit of a mixed bag for me on this one, but I think it helped capture that otherworldly place and feeling the future holds.

This has to be one of my favorite tracks Ive done this past year! I recently rewatched Carole and Tuesday for the first time in years, and was completely entranced by the first track that GGK performs called Milky Way. It just had this beautiful, immersive feeling about the vastness of space and the world as a whole.
After figuring out my opening chord progression, I recorded a really funky bass line, and started to see the whole vision for this track. I had a lot of fun doing the vocals for this one, both recording, and mixing. I utilized a lot of fun techniques to get fullness on the vocals and give that floaty feeling we get when we think of space. And more recently, Ive been trying to be better about playing saxophone more consistently and integrating in my work again. This felt like the perfect track to showcase the saxophone again. It was really fun to give it that 80s pop sax solo vibe with the reverb and delay and have it blend the sax with everything else in the track.
As for the video, I really wanted to capture the different colors we see with galaxies, auroras, and the planets. So I opted to use my colored lights for this track, but wanted to have multiple colors per shot, which I think worked really well!

Youโve heard of Persona vibes, but what about Animal Crossing vibes?
Iโve been watching SpyxFamily recently and REALLY enjoyed the music! As I was analyzing it, I learned about the Bird Blues Progression! I had definitely heard the progression a lot, but never knew the term for that specific progression!
I adapted the progression a bit, but used it as a framework for this tune. As I started recording parts, it reminded me a lot of music Iโve heard in Animal Crossing New Horizons and I ran with it!
I wanted to channel that charming, cute vibe into the composition keeping things nice and light! And I figured A Warm welcome was a great way to open this new year! Iโm so excited for what this year holds!
I also got a new guitar VST during Black Friday and finally was able to mess around with and use it! Still a lot to learn, but nice to have a guitar in my library!
Thereโs a lot in the works for YouTube this year and Iโm excited to share it!
