I'm learning more often than not this year, my compositions happen on a complete whim. It used to be I'd have a rough idea of what I'd want to write a track for or I'd go to the piano with the intention of composing. However, this track did not fall into either of those scenarios. I was actually on a phone call, turned on the piano, and played the first 2 measures of this track as a warm up for a practice session. And I just thought it sounded so cool, I hung up the phone call, and immediately recorded a voice memo with the rough structure of the tune.
The next day, I was back at the piano, and did a formal recording in my DAW. This tune was definitely inspired by aivi and surasshu's album Meanwhile as I've been listening to it the past few months. I had been using it as a reference for a client, but it was still in my head weeks after the fact! Wind Rider, the opening track was definitely a big inspiration for the instrumentation of this track.
I just love the feeling of running towards something exciting. After sketching the track, the title Chasing the Future just made sense. It really felt like it was capturing that kind of feeling. The future can often be scary and daunting, but it can also be really exhilarating to jump into the unknown! I wanted this composition to speak more to the ladder.
As for the video, this track is so piano heavy, I wanted to utilize the different keyboards I have available to me. It allowed me to get various angles and perspectives that I can't achieve with my primary piano. And after all the Noodles of a Game Dreamer videos, I've been inspired to take my filming to another level. To be a lot more deliberate with how I frame and light shots and take the extra time to adjust between shots. The colored lights were a bit of a mixed bag for me on this one, but I think it helped capture that otherworldly place and feeling the future holds.
Hope you enjoy with original digital fusion track, Chasing the Future~

This has to be one of my favorite tracks Ive done this past year! I recently rewatched Carole and Tuesday for the first time in years, and was completely entranced by the first track that GGK performs called Milky Way. It just had this beautiful, immersive feeling about the vastness of space and the world as a whole.
After figuring out my opening chord progression, I recorded a really funky bass line, and started to see the whole vision for this track. I had a lot of fun doing the vocals for this one, both recording, and mixing. I utilized a lot of fun techniques to get fullness on the vocals and give that floaty feeling we get when we think of space. And more recently, Ive been trying to be better about playing saxophone more consistently and integrating in my work again. This felt like the perfect track to showcase the saxophone again. It was really fun to give it that 80s pop sax solo vibe with the reverb and delay and have it blend the sax with everything else in the track.
As for the video, I really wanted to capture the different colors we see with galaxies, auroras, and the planets. So I opted to use my colored lights for this track, but wanted to have multiple colors per shot, which I think worked really well!
Hope you enjoy my new spacey original track, Andromeda Mist~

You’ve heard of Persona vibes, but what about Animal Crossing vibes?
I’ve been watching SpyxFamily recently and REALLY enjoyed the music! As I was analyzing it, I learned about the Bird Blues Progression! I had definitely heard the progression a lot, but never knew the term for that specific progression!
I adapted the progression a bit, but used it as a framework for this tune. As I started recording parts, it reminded me a lot of music I’ve heard in Animal Crossing New Horizons and I ran with it!
I wanted to channel that charming, cute vibe into the composition keeping things nice and light! And I figured A Warm welcome was a great way to open this new year! I’m so excited for what this year holds!
I also got a new guitar VST during Black Friday and finally was able to mess around with and use it! Still a lot to learn, but nice to have a guitar in my library!
There’s a lot in the works for YouTube this year and I’m excited to share it!
As for now, I hope you enjoy this original composition, #AWarmWelcome done by me, #SabIrene

![Ganons Tower: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time [Saxophone & Piano Cover] | Sab Irene
Heres my video game saxophone cover of Ganons Tower from the Legend of Zelda; Ocarina of Time! Im Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!
This video has been long coming! I recorded this in the summer, but wanted to wait to share this one. I really enjoyed doing this cover!
It really pushed my piano abilities and how I interpret music. I dont have that much Zelda music on the channel, which is a shame because the music is so great! I have all the games on a list of games I need to play! Ocarina of Time is first on my list, mostly because I have a copy for the 3DS already. I got one a few years ago and tried playing it and failed lol. My main gaming experience was Pokémon so to be in a first person, real time fighting game scared me so much! Im excited to give it another try and hopefully play the whole game!
As for the arrangement, I heard this track and it stuck out to me because of the organ and harmonies. The quartal harmonies used in this piece are so cool and really give an open feeling despite how sinister the context is. The original track is super slow and repetitive, so I wanted to change that by making it upbeat and kind of latin inspired! That definitely helped me push my piano skills to get fast, even notes. I also decided it would be good to layer Zelda motives on top. It started by accident with me playing Song of Storms a bit distorted and then I decided to add a couple more. I even consulted my brother about some memorable motives from Zelda when I couldnt think of anymore!
I had so much fun transforming this track! I hope you enjoy this video game saxophone cover of Ganons Tower from Ocarina of Time!

As I continue to venture into harder hitting genres and style, I knew a metal track would be on the list. However, that felt like a massive jump for me right off the bat, so I thought about battle themes in RPGs and how they utilize a lot of rock and metal elements in terms of instrumentation and style. And Final Fantasy came to mind! I’ve never really had exposure to Final Fantasy until I was a bit older, and when I did, it was just the music. But man is the music amazing to listen to and analyze.
So I thought about what it would sound like if I wrote my own FF style battle theme? While FFXVI was just released the other day, my inspiration came more from FFV and FVII battle themes. I definitely pushed myself to utilize instruments, harmonic patterns, and progressions that I was a bit less familiar with, but had so much fun with it!
The drums were definitely a big challenge since I wanted to make sure my parts were playable for a drummer, especially at such a fast tempo with some busy drum fills. As I wrote the drums and bass parts, I found myself asking the question, How would Alex Moukala do this? Alex is absolutely incredible for reimagining Final Fantasy music and giving it his signature flair. So I thought about how to inject the Sab Irene flair in this composition. And I think the B section accurately represents what I’m known for with my music, but still keeping with the FF battle theme!
One thing that was super difficult in this track was the mixing. I’ve gained a lot of skills over the years, but mixing guitars is something I’m still pretty new to. A lot of instruments in this track play different roles, which requires a lot more attention to mix each part to best serve the composition as a whole.
Overall, this track brought a lot of new challenges, but I had so much fun learning how to tackle each of these problems. Hope you enjoy my #finalfantasy inspired final #vgm boss battle track This Is the End composed by me, #sabirene ~

Would you believe if I told you the project file with this track started as a Picross inspired track? The past few months Ive been a bit stuck about what to write for my tracks. It felt like I was writing the same track over and over again for a few months. And one day I tried writing my own version of a Picross track as Ive been investing A LOT of time into Picross haha. I wasnt really happy with how it sounded, and played something a bit darker. I actually really like the sound of it, and decided to flesh it out. I started with the opening chord pattern, then heard the octave ostinato figure, and it started coming together. I was thinking about how this could fit in the newest Famicom Detective Club game, Emio- The Smiling Man. The track was originally 40 seconds, and then I thought it would be cool to add some hi-hat like you hear in the Pirates Grotto in Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.
Ive honestly never written anything like this before, and Im very proud of how it turned out for my first attempt. The track is much more minimalist than I typically write and relies pretty heavily on production techniques such as delay and panning. I wanted to evoke the feeling of constant move and not knowing where things are in your surroundings, which definitely speaks to the horror and suspenses elements you would hear in a detective song. I think one of my favorite things I did for this track was the bass drum towards the end of the track. I didn’t have any bass drum VSTs on hand, so I used a large kick drum from Superior Drummer 3, rendered and duplicated it, then transposed it down an octave, and repeated the process twice. It gave me 5 kick drums to place throughout the space and sound more like a concert bass drum. I think it worked really well!
As for the video, I really thought about it and spent a lot of time setting up the shots. I wanted to evoke the feeling of walking down a city street, late at night, with one lone street light as your source of life. So I actually set up a little light above the piano so it looked like a street lamp above me. I had a lot of fun filming something darker than usual, especially, the keyframed vignette in the beginning. I knew the video needed something more, and opted to use some purple smoke, since it reminded me a lot of the visuals I saw in Emios trailers. I had so much fun with this track and Im so glad it helped get me out of my writing funk.
Hope you enjoy my Emio Inspired track, Smiling Shadows ~

I guess Gen 5 music isnt that bad lol! Im a huge fan of Pokémon Gen 3 & 4, but I figured it would be good to try something different and to collaborate on it with Carlos! Its been awhile since we collaborate and we had a lot of fun with this one! Its always a struggle when we collaborate because were both very opinionated, but we really worked together to blend together both our styles and have a fun time making it!
Hope you enjoy our Pokémon canon in the middle of the tune as well as both solos in this funky Lacunosa Town jazz sax remix!

This when has been in the works for quite awhile! I recorded the initial idea back in early May and did a bulk of the work in June while traveling, but then other projects consumed my life in the summer months haha
I originally recorded this on acoustic piano with vocals, but wanted to have electric piano be the backbone of this composition. With vocals, flute, bass, and piano supporting it. I programmed a lot of parts when I didnt have access to my keyboard, and learned a lot taking a similar approach like Vernal Wandering.
I was pretty happy with this track in mid June, but had quite a few projects backlogged that I wanted to release first. And then I thought I should add more to it since it felt a little short. However, after adding more to it, it felt like the piece wasnt the same. So I opted to keep this one shorter, and maybe Ill revisit it in the future and extend it, but Im happy with tune right now!
I was definitely a bit inspired by the Mushoku Tensei ED2 with the chords and feeling of the opening section, but it was fun to turn that into something more in my own style.
For the video, I was in a bit of rush as I had to film this before getting my wisdom teeth removed and packing some stuff. I hadnt used my flood lights in a few months and knew they would be perfect to convey that dreamy night sky feel I wanted to channel in this track. I wanted to have a bit of color variety with the flood lights, and thought about the colors you would see in auroras in the night sky as well.
Hope you enjoy my original #VGM town theme #CityofSwayingStars composed by me, #SabIrene

Sooo I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since Deltarune came out! I’m so excited to see more of the game as it comes! I wanted to cover this song as soon as I heard it in game.
Putting this song together had quite a few stages and layers. I originally wanted it to be 2 wind quartets of saxophones and other woodwinds, but scratched that idea pretty quickly. The focus on the past few months has been solo covers. Last year there were a lot of collaborations, which were fun, but I really want to tap into what I’m capable of on my own.
I started with just a simple version, pretty close to the original just with instrument changes and some additional choir parts. I was pretty content with it, but then thought about how it would sound if it was Latin jazz. I didn’t want to scrap the cover I just recorded, so I opted to put them together (2 days before the video was coming out).
To me, I realized that it was like putting both sides of myself into this cover. I spend most of my musical time studying classical saxophone, playing in a fairly traditional wind ensemble, etc. But in my free time, I play anything else. I love playing all types of jazz and enjoy listening to most music not from the classical realm. To me, the past few months have been about experimentation. I’m enjoying bring some jazz back into the channel as I continue to learn more about jazz harmony and arranging.
I’m really glad I ended up adding the Latin section into this tune. I would smile every time I would listen and record a part. I’ve been really happy with the content coming out the past few months, but even more so with this cover. I’m so excited for the things coming up for the rest of 2019! Really pushing myself to try new things and gaining more musical confidence.
Hope you enjoy this cover of Scarlet Forest from Deltarune!
