Here's my video game composition of Amid Thought from new album Lofi to Scale to! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make compositions that combine two of my favorite things!

I honestly don’t remember too much about the writing process of this track. I just remember writing this track on a spring afternoon amid a very busy week in my life. I’ve always liked Dorian keys since they have a lot of fun possibilities for chord progressions! One of my favorites being a i and IV. I used that as my starting point for this track, and the rest just kind of fell into place!
I wanted the track to evoke a relaxing nature, but also make you stop and think for a second and go huh? The i IV progression tends to have that effect and I wanted to use it to reflect how the learning process can feel at points. Sometimes we’re cruising along and feel good about where we’re going, and then we see something that makes us go, “wait what?” It’s an important part of the process to pause, especially when something sounds different or feels off. It’s also important to embrace those moments as it can mean they’re becoming more observant and picking up on the finer details to improve further!
As for the video, I kept it relatively simple as this is a chill, simple tune! I’m having fun trying different visuals and lighting for videos and it really helps make a difference!

Sooo I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since Deltarune came out! I’m so excited to see more of the game as it comes! I wanted to cover this song as soon as I heard it in game.
Putting this song together had quite a few stages and layers. I originally wanted it to be 2 wind quartets of saxophones and other woodwinds, but scratched that idea pretty quickly. The focus on the past few months has been solo covers. Last year there were a lot of collaborations, which were fun, but I really want to tap into what I’m capable of on my own.
I started with just a simple version, pretty close to the original just with instrument changes and some additional choir parts. I was pretty content with it, but then thought about how it would sound if it was Latin jazz. I didn’t want to scrap the cover I just recorded, so I opted to put them together (2 days before the video was coming out).
To me, I realized that it was like putting both sides of myself into this cover. I spend most of my musical time studying classical saxophone, playing in a fairly traditional wind ensemble, etc. But in my free time, I play anything else. I love playing all types of jazz and enjoy listening to most music not from the classical realm. To me, the past few months have been about experimentation. I’m enjoying bring some jazz back into the channel as I continue to learn more about jazz harmony and arranging.
I’m really glad I ended up adding the Latin section into this tune. I would smile every time I would listen and record a part. I’ve been really happy with the content coming out the past few months, but even more so with this cover. I’m so excited for the things coming up for the rest of 2019! Really pushing myself to try new things and gaining more musical confidence.

A new video with the new camera! Ive had Sycamores Theme on my list for a long time and since I got my flute back, I decided to cover it right away in better quality.
I was talking with insaneintherainmusic about this song and he heard Dragon Roost Island and thought I should include it. I originally just put it in the bass line, but added the melody just to see how it sounded. So thank you to him :) Also, thanks to insaneintherainmusic for creating the percussion for this piece!

Yes I know its March, and practically April lol
At the start of the year, I really struggled with what I wanted to do with YouTube and just work in general. It was really tough for me. Anytime I tried to write something for myself or for a client, I just felt so stuck and like no ideas I had were good.
I definitely felt a lot of pressure to compose compared to it being a fun, creative outlet while I did covers. And after a month of being stuck and so tough on myself, I sat down at the piano and played the opening pattern.
One of my goals the past month or so has been maintaining momentum in a tune and not just relying on percussion to create a groove or momentum. I realized a lot of my favorite tunes created momentum with harmonic ostinatos and other pitched based techniques rather than percussive. I definitely did a bit of both, but it was to start a piece with something totally new! I always start with a chord progression and sing a melody. This started with the ostinato and was just a bunch of improvised parts recorded in my DAW back in February.
I was largely inspired by Chrono Trigger and Ace Attorney when writing this track. When the drums come in, I felt transported to the world of Ace Attorney, hearing this a little bit as a character theme youd hear in court or something. As for the Chrono Trigger influence, the chords for sure, and the softer sections just felt very ethereal in the way some of my favorite tracks from CT feel! I didnt really have a specific goal for where this would fit in a video game, it was just nice to write something and finish!
As for the video, I wanted to take a simple approach since its all keyboard parts. I just wanted to do little color differences between the piano, EP, and synth parts and of course the particles! I got a new camera in December and Im so happy to get to use it and keep learning more with each new video!
I owe a lot to this composition as Ive been able to push forward with a LOT of different projects and try new things in compositions that I cant wait to share soon! (I promise it wont be 2-3 months til the next video). Might be in a few weeks!

January has been the month of redos for me! Its been fun to explore old covers and give them a proper update!
Canalave City is such a beautiful tune in Pokémon DPPt! The music reflects the area so well and I love how you can watch the water, but also go read about Sinnoh lore in the Canalave library! I wanted to keep things chill and was inspired by one of my favorite tunes, which is The List by Moonchild. I wanted the cover to have elements of lo-fi music with the drum machine and phone EQ in a few sections.
I really wanted the cover to sound like I was just jamming, pretty much just having fun making music. Sometimes stress takes away the fun of creating music, so this cover really helped remind me why I do what I do. I love making music that makes people smile and relax.
So much of this arrangement was written as I recorded. I wanted to mess around with creating layers within an instrument. Ive been struggling with arranging a lot because I try to throw every instrument I own into a cover rather than highlighting a select few. I had limited instruments with me when I made this cover, and I think it turned out really well!

I am so happy about this cover! Some of you may know I watched all of Steven Universe back in April and completely fell in love with it. I have a long list of music that I want to cover, but this one jumped to the top of the list for a special reason!
A few weeks ago, Zorsy told me he would be in Boston and I hadnt seen him in almost 4 years... I asked if he wanted to do a certain SU song and he was down, but then offered to collab on the song that would be announced for the movie at Comic Con. I watched the trailer that came out a few days later only to learn he played the song for the movie!
We wanted to keep the cover super low key since we were only in town at the same time for a few hours and recorded 2 videos! It was great getting to catch up after so long and make music together!

I think this is the fastest I have ever had to produce a song for YouTube in my entire career. I didn’t really have any ideas or inspiration to write anything new these past few weeks. I was mostly working on some long term projects and revisiting old projects to try some new plug-ins I bought recently.
Then on Thursday (72 hours before the video was supposed to come out), I finally got an idea. I’ve been trying to resume daily practice on piano and saxophone since it’s been a few years. More recently, I’ve been dedicating time to production, which has definitely paid off! But I want to keep pushing on my instruments as well and honing my craft as a performer. Part of that includes weekly sight reading, which has been from my giant Ghibli songbook. As I’ve been listening and practicing the music of Joe Hisaishi, I realized I’ve never tried to write my own version of music you would hear in the overture of a Ghibli film.
This past week I learned the opening to Nausicaä, Valley of the Wind and really enjoyed it! (Which I still need to watch). There’s this melancholy to the track, but it’s still so grand! I also pulled out One’s Summer Day as it’s one of my favorite Ghibli tracks. I was reminded of how much Joe Hisashi uses quartal harmony in his work and suddenly got an idea I love using quartal harmony in my own compositions as well, and opened with that.
I had to act pretty quickly as I had 72 hours to compose, record, produce, film, edit, mix, and master a track to be up to my standards. And it was a challenge…
After recording the piano structure, I was writing and recording on the fly. Figuring out what instruments I wanted, where, and what I wanted them to play. I knew I wanted a wooden flute sound in the repeat of the main theme and dug up an old recorder and doubled it with flute. I would have loved to include saxophone in this, but I went for a more traditional orchestra ensemble with flutes, clarinets, and trumpets. I hadn’t played my trumpet in years, but it was so much fun to integrate into this track I couldn’t pass it up.
Two of the biggest challenges for me with this track was making sure everything had its own space and sounding like it was in the same space. As well as strings. I’ve never had a great string library and I’m currently trying to swap the one I use since it’s really janky and just not what I’m looking for. The audio kept cutting out the string samples during render, but I couldn’t just get rid of the part. The strings add a lot of depth and texture to this track. So in the hours before release, I was trying any string sample I had, but there were problems with all of them.
Aside from those challenges and the time constraint, I really like the composition and hopefully I can revisit it when I have more time! I’d love to arrange this for a full orchestra ensemble and see what it would sound like with live musicians! And polish up the mix even more.

Such an underrated theme from Pokémon XY! Its been awhile since Ive covered a track from this game, but Ive heard it so much I had to!
I heard a cool remix of this track recently and thought about how I would make it my own. I wanted vocals to be the focus of this covers and have the rhythm section really compliment it. While there isnt a lot of saxophone in covers lately, Ive been trying to push having fun and improvising a bit more since its a weaker skill of mine. Its been fun figuring out how to bring the saxophone in without being jarring or like it doesnt fit.
I really wanted this to be a chill cover and just jam and have fun. Its been my philosophy with my music in 2021 and Ive been so happy with the music Ive been making the past 6 months!

So this is the beginning. A long journey awaits you.
I have wanted to cover the Chrono Trigger Main Theme for awhile. I absolutely loved playing Chrono Trigger! It is probably my favorite video game Ive ever played. The story is so incredible and obviously the music is phenomenal if I like covering it.
There are so many layers to this piece, so mixing was a challenge. That seems to be a theme with every Chrono Trigger cover I do.
The piece has some beautiful chords and really interesting melodic lines. When I was arranging this, I was only gonna play tenor saxophone and didnt know how I would get the intro because the melody is so spread out. A friend of mine suggested including alto, and Im glad that I got my alto when I did. This track pushed me to get the best tone Ive ever had on alto. Good thing too because I gotta start playing alto primarily for college next semester.
Also, I had my jury earlier. It went pretty well! Im sad since its my last one for tenor saxophone. Gotta focus on alto now for college.

This definitely has to be one of my favorite projects of the year!
I met Boz and Zen in March of this year through an online event, and just loved their stuff! A little after then, I saw they were playing through Danganronpa on stream and loved getting to watch them play the game and help when I could. This summer, I reached out to them because I knew I wanted to do some Danganronpa music with them for the Switch port!
BoZ and Zen do hip hop/nerdcore vgm stuff where they write their own lyrics for rapping and vocals! Its really incredible (go check out there stuff pls)
For this arrangement, I really wanted to capture the nature of this Climax reasoning compared to the first 2 games. When I first heard this track, I was a bit upset it wasnt the previous Climax Reasoning, but it had such a different energy and feeling because V3 is definitely different than the other 2 main games.
I wanted to highlight the themes of Danganronpa, but have them be a bit more universal, things that apply outside the scope of the game. So a lot of the themes are about hope, trust, etc.
I wanted to keep my parts simple so I could really highlight BoZ and Zens skills throughout the track!

Well I definitely had good timing with the release of this composition!
In early April, I decided to listen to the Torna OST again while cooking lunch. And I was reminded how much I enjoy the Torna version of Gormott! So I wanted to channel that vibe into my own composition! Fitting as the new wave of Xenoblade 3 DLC just dropped a few days ago!
I know I’m known for a lot of chill, RnB stuff, but I wanted to get back to my roots a little bit with this one. I started as a pianist, vocalist, and saxophonist on YouTube doing jazz fusion style music. Japanese jazz trios have such a distinct sound that I love and I wanted to see how would I do it myself?
I recorded the piano part one morning and just loved how it turned out! I really only had the first 90 seconds of the track squared away before I hit the record button. I just kinda went for it on the rest of the piano part/structure for the tune.
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to have the melody in this track. I went back and forth for quite awhile on piano, synth, or a woodwind. And I’m glad I went with saxophone! I haven’t been played my saxophone a whole lot in the past few years unless I’ve had a gig or recording to do for someone else. And I loved getting to play again. Saxophone is my favorite instrument that I play and I just get a special feeling of joy and happiness whenever I play.
It was also so much fun to get to shred a little bit on saxophone. A lot of my music is a bit slower paced and chill, so to do something punchy and more fast-paced was a fun experiment and learning experience!
I almost put this track out a few weeks ago, but had a commission project come up and wanted to put that out first. That worked out incredibly in my favor since it gave me a few extra weeks to really tighten up the mix on this one. I learned a lot about programming drums and introducing sample layers to help beef up certain drum parts. As well as messing with duplicate layers in the saxophone part to give a little more depth! Another bonus of the extra time for putting out Shilling Star was getting to refilm my parts since they were a bit blurry at first 🙂
For the video, I kept it pretty simple, letting the particle speeds kinda guide the listening experience with the different intensities in this track.
