Here's my jazz tenor saxophone cover of the Main Theme from Chrono Trigger! I'm Sab and I love jazz and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!
So this is the beginning. A long journey awaits you.
I have wanted to cover the Chrono Trigger Main Theme for awhile. I absolutely loved playing Chrono Trigger! It is probably my favorite video game I've ever played. The story is so incredible and obviously the music is phenomenal if I like covering it.
There are so many layers to this piece, so mixing was a challenge. That seems to be a theme with every Chrono Trigger cover I do.
The piece has some beautiful chords and really interesting melodic lines. When I was arranging this, I was only gonna play tenor saxophone and didn't know how I would get the intro because the melody is so spread out. A friend of mine suggested including alto, and I'm glad that I got my alto when I did. This track pushed me to get the best tone I've ever had on alto. Good thing too because I gotta start playing alto primarily for college next semester.
Also, I had my jury earlier. It went pretty well! I'm sad since it's my last one for tenor saxophone. Gotta focus on alto now for college.

This definitely has to be one of my favorite projects of the year!
I met Boz and Zen in March of this year through an online event, and just loved their stuff! A little after then, I saw they were playing through Danganronpa on stream and loved getting to watch them play the game and help when I could. This summer, I reached out to them because I knew I wanted to do some Danganronpa music with them for the Switch port!
BoZ and Zen do hip hop/nerdcore vgm stuff where they write their own lyrics for rapping and vocals! Its really incredible (go check out there stuff pls)
For this arrangement, I really wanted to capture the nature of this Climax reasoning compared to the first 2 games. When I first heard this track, I was a bit upset it wasnt the previous Climax Reasoning, but it had such a different energy and feeling because V3 is definitely different than the other 2 main games.
I wanted to highlight the themes of Danganronpa, but have them be a bit more universal, things that apply outside the scope of the game. So a lot of the themes are about hope, trust, etc.
I wanted to keep my parts simple so I could really highlight BoZ and Zens skills throughout the track!

Well I definitely had good timing with the release of this composition!
In early April, I decided to listen to the Torna OST again while cooking lunch. And I was reminded how much I enjoy the Torna version of Gormott! So I wanted to channel that vibe into my own composition! Fitting as the new wave of Xenoblade 3 DLC just dropped a few days ago!
I know I’m known for a lot of chill, RnB stuff, but I wanted to get back to my roots a little bit with this one. I started as a pianist, vocalist, and saxophonist on YouTube doing jazz fusion style music. Japanese jazz trios have such a distinct sound that I love and I wanted to see how would I do it myself?
I recorded the piano part one morning and just loved how it turned out! I really only had the first 90 seconds of the track squared away before I hit the record button. I just kinda went for it on the rest of the piano part/structure for the tune.
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to have the melody in this track. I went back and forth for quite awhile on piano, synth, or a woodwind. And I’m glad I went with saxophone! I haven’t been played my saxophone a whole lot in the past few years unless I’ve had a gig or recording to do for someone else. And I loved getting to play again. Saxophone is my favorite instrument that I play and I just get a special feeling of joy and happiness whenever I play.
It was also so much fun to get to shred a little bit on saxophone. A lot of my music is a bit slower paced and chill, so to do something punchy and more fast-paced was a fun experiment and learning experience!
I almost put this track out a few weeks ago, but had a commission project come up and wanted to put that out first. That worked out incredibly in my favor since it gave me a few extra weeks to really tighten up the mix on this one. I learned a lot about programming drums and introducing sample layers to help beef up certain drum parts. As well as messing with duplicate layers in the saxophone part to give a little more depth! Another bonus of the extra time for putting out Shilling Star was getting to refilm my parts since they were a bit blurry at first 🙂
For the video, I kept it pretty simple, letting the particle speeds kinda guide the listening experience with the different intensities in this track.

Heres my jazz tenor saxophone fusion cover of Rogueport from Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door! Im Sab and I love jazz and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!
Ive wanted to do this tune since 2014 and Im glad I finally did it. I was supposed to do a collaboration with someone, but we need a bit more time for it, so Rogueport was born.
The interesting thing about this cover was that I did everything minus final mixing and rendering in 60 hours. I wrote the arrangement, sent it to insaneintherain to do drums, programmed bass, did all the vocal parts, saxophone parts, and piano parts in just 60 hours. And the preliminary mixing and video editing.
I had to cram in the cover before I went off to school and Im glad I did because this first week has been so flipping hectic. Ive had so much stuff going and its been pretty crazy.
I really love the style of the original and Carlos did a great job preserving it, but also making it more lively! The choir layers may become a regular part of covers now! They add a nice texture and tone. I love the ambiance they give in that modal piano section.
Modal stuff is so challenging, but its really growing on me and really challenging me when it comes to improvisation.
This was a really fun tune to play overall and hopefully more Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door in the future! Its one of my favorite games and I love the music from it so much!

This cover was so much fun to put together. Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games and OST is so freaking amazing!
Waterblight Ganon is one of my favorites even though it took me about 11 tries or so to beat Waterblight Ganon and it was my first Divine Beast in the game.
Ive wanted to do this cover for awhile, but always thought it was too difficult and I also didnt really know how to approach this cover.
One day a few weeks ago I decided I was just gonna do it, and Im really glad I did! This has to be one of my favorite covers on the channel! And the soprano playing shocked me since Ive only been playing soprano sax about 3 months and I mostly play it for my saxophone quartet.
This cover was fairly straightforward to arrange and record. I did most of the recording in one day somehow, but the real challenge was mixing this because there were so many layers that overlapped.
I really wanted to capture elements of the original, but make it my own. The song kind of sits on one chord, so a solo wasnt looking to optimal, so I figured it would be cool to have an extended choir part that had elements of Ganons Theme used throughout the Zelda series, even using the theme itself at the end.

Another composition done down to the wire! Last week I was working on something completely different, but realized I needed more time for it. And I thought about what to do next. I realized I’ve never really written a vocal tune about myself in all my years of composing and writing after talking with a student about their songwriting. Most lyrical tracks I write are about nature and how I feel about it, but not myself or how I feel in general. I think it’s an easy thing to avoid because it can feel incredibly scary to be vulnerable or just feel too cliche writing about certain emotions and experiences.
One thing I feel like everyone has felt, especially myself, is feeling grey. Where the world kind of washes over you and people or things that you make you feel any positive emotion, do nothing for you in this state. To me, it’s like a form of sadness or depression, but there’s a numbness to it. And it sucks, when you feel grey and can’t really pinpoint why and you don’t know how to get out of it. That’s what this song really speaks to. To capture the essence of this grey feeling and this longing to break out of it.
I wanted to keep it very simple and exposed, as expressing your emotions can be very personal and raw. The mix was definitely a challenge because there were so few layers. I had to think about how to make the the piano and vocals feel very full, but without being too boomy or too loud in general. It becomes a very delicate balance, and one I’ll continue to work on as time goes on. There was a lot of automating FX for each section since my voice and the piano needed to function in such different ways.
As for the video, I wanted to do various angles of the vocals to give more variation as it’s just voice and piano. I didn’t want to do plain black and white for this since the track is called Grey Shade of Blue. So I finally got to try a technique I’ve seen a lot of over the years, but never tried myself, which was a color accent! I have a blue dress that was the perfect shade to compliment the otherwise monochromatic palette of the video.

Ive really been enjoying playing Pokémon White 2 on stream the past month! Its one of the few main series games I havent played yet, which is really a shame. BECAUSE THE MUSIC IN THE GAME IS AWESOME! This is probably the first of many Gen 5 Pokémon cover to come in the next few months as I playthrough the game on Twitch! (which you should check out 👀 ) twitch.tv/sab_irene
For this arrangement, it started while the song was fresh in my head, and I just recorded myself jamming on it. I loved how it sounded so much, I wrote out the sheet music to my recording and made it a full cover! I started with just piano and vocals, but knew I wanted to make it a chill jazz combo vibe. A lot of the vocal layers were just added as I was bringing the arrangement to life. As for the sax soli, it was originally a vocal solo I made up, but I thought it would be fun to turn it into a sax soli!
For the video, I wanted to keep it pretty simple. Virbank City has a bit of grimey, dark aesthetic to it in the game. So I wanted to channel those colors and lighting into the video. And since the gym leader is a musician who plays in a dive bar, I thought the flannel fit the vibe too. Im having fun making the filming and video editing more personal to the specific video! Its been a lot of fun to figure out how I can transport you to the area visually!
I would say the biggest challenge was definitely the mix, but Im ultimately happy with it! More of mixing time now is spent on refining the FX I use rather than balancing the levels. I feel like Ive come a long way with my mixes. Im enjoying learning the nuances of mixing and how I can achieve specific sounds! It really is amazing!
