Here's my video game saxophone cover of Waterblight Ganon from Zelda Breath of the Wild! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!
This cover was so much fun to put together. Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games and OST is so freaking amazing!
Waterblight Ganon is one of my favorites even though it took me about 11 tries or so to beat Waterblight Ganon and it was my first Divine Beast in the game.
I've wanted to do this cover for awhile, but always thought it was too difficult and I also didn't really know how to approach this cover.
One day a few weeks ago I decided I was just gonna do it, and I'm really glad I did! This has to be one of my favorite covers on the channel! And the soprano playing shocked me since I've only been playing soprano sax about 3 months and I mostly play it for my saxophone quartet.
This cover was fairly straightforward to arrange and record. I did most of the recording in one day somehow, but the real challenge was mixing this because there were so many layers that overlapped.
I really wanted to capture elements of the original, but make it my own. The song kind of sits on one chord, so a solo wasn't looking to optimal, so I figured it would be cool to have an extended choir part that had elements of Ganon's Theme used throughout the Zelda series, even using the theme itself at the end.

Another composition done down to the wire! Last week I was working on something completely different, but realized I needed more time for it. And I thought about what to do next. I realized I’ve never really written a vocal tune about myself in all my years of composing and writing after talking with a student about their songwriting. Most lyrical tracks I write are about nature and how I feel about it, but not myself or how I feel in general. I think it’s an easy thing to avoid because it can feel incredibly scary to be vulnerable or just feel too cliche writing about certain emotions and experiences.
One thing I feel like everyone has felt, especially myself, is feeling grey. Where the world kind of washes over you and people or things that you make you feel any positive emotion, do nothing for you in this state. To me, it’s like a form of sadness or depression, but there’s a numbness to it. And it sucks, when you feel grey and can’t really pinpoint why and you don’t know how to get out of it. That’s what this song really speaks to. To capture the essence of this grey feeling and this longing to break out of it.
I wanted to keep it very simple and exposed, as expressing your emotions can be very personal and raw. The mix was definitely a challenge because there were so few layers. I had to think about how to make the the piano and vocals feel very full, but without being too boomy or too loud in general. It becomes a very delicate balance, and one I’ll continue to work on as time goes on. There was a lot of automating FX for each section since my voice and the piano needed to function in such different ways.
As for the video, I wanted to do various angles of the vocals to give more variation as it’s just voice and piano. I didn’t want to do plain black and white for this since the track is called Grey Shade of Blue. So I finally got to try a technique I’ve seen a lot of over the years, but never tried myself, which was a color accent! I have a blue dress that was the perfect shade to compliment the otherwise monochromatic palette of the video.

Ive really been enjoying playing Pokémon White 2 on stream the past month! Its one of the few main series games I havent played yet, which is really a shame. BECAUSE THE MUSIC IN THE GAME IS AWESOME! This is probably the first of many Gen 5 Pokémon cover to come in the next few months as I playthrough the game on Twitch! (which you should check out 👀 ) twitch.tv/sab_irene
For this arrangement, it started while the song was fresh in my head, and I just recorded myself jamming on it. I loved how it sounded so much, I wrote out the sheet music to my recording and made it a full cover! I started with just piano and vocals, but knew I wanted to make it a chill jazz combo vibe. A lot of the vocal layers were just added as I was bringing the arrangement to life. As for the sax soli, it was originally a vocal solo I made up, but I thought it would be fun to turn it into a sax soli!
For the video, I wanted to keep it pretty simple. Virbank City has a bit of grimey, dark aesthetic to it in the game. So I wanted to channel those colors and lighting into the video. And since the gym leader is a musician who plays in a dive bar, I thought the flannel fit the vibe too. Im having fun making the filming and video editing more personal to the specific video! Its been a lot of fun to figure out how I can transport you to the area visually!
I would say the biggest challenge was definitely the mix, but Im ultimately happy with it! More of mixing time now is spent on refining the FX I use rather than balancing the levels. I feel like Ive come a long way with my mixes. Im enjoying learning the nuances of mixing and how I can achieve specific sounds! It really is amazing!

So this is definitely different than what I normally do haha! Pokémon Mystery Dungeon was a huge part of my childhood. I am so excited for the rerelease on Switch in just a few weeks!
I didnt finish Explorers of Time until my first or second year of college though. I started when it came out and just gave up after awhile. But I went back to it and super glad I finished it! The song made me cry quite a lot when I first heard it in game. It holds a special place in my heart.
This cover came together in about 3 days, which is surprising haha! I was playing it at the piano and just started singing what came to my head. I really took the idea and ran with it haha! I had some saxophone parts written out, but I prefer how it sounded without them.
I was largely inspired by my friend, VGR for this cover. He released a remix of this a few months back and I loved it! It was a really chill remix, but still very emotional, which is what I was going for. I was also inspired by my friend Zabrina Hay who is a phenomenal musician Ive known in Boston for awhile. She always makes such beautifully layered music really showcasing everything she can do. I cannot thank them both enough for being wonderful inspirations!
Lastly, theres been a lot of stuff going, mostly just being busy with balancing everything in my life. Student teaching, college, YouTube, private teaching, and just being a person. Sometime it sucks when I cant be there for the people I care about because of work, obligations, and distance. And even though I cant always BE THERE, the people I care about are always in my thoughts.

Last week I was struggling to create any new music, so I spent a lot of time delving into older mixes or unreleased projects to see what I would do differently in terms of mixing and productions. It reminded me how far I’ve come in terms of production and how I want to keep pushing compositionally in terms of different genres. I was getting a little worried I wouldn’t have something done for today, but I asked a friend what style of music they’d wanna see me tackle next, and they said Synthwave.
Apart from playing saxophone on someone’s synthwave track, I’ve never really done anything with synthwave music. I do enjoy listening to it a lot though! It really just transports you somewhere different and really pushes the concept of space in a mix.
So I quickly got to work after listening to some synthwave music from different playlists. There aren’t too many layers to this track, but getting the balance right was really difficult. I played a lot with automating certain fx throughout the track, both the individual instruments as well as the mastering chain.
Two of my biggest inspirations for this track were VanilluxePavilion’s synthwave cover of the Regi Battle theme and Foolish Heart sung by Nyanners. They both hit really hard and have a simple drum beat that works so well! It allows all the other elements to shine throughout the tracks.
For my drums, I took a different approach than usual. Typically, I use drum VSTs like Superior Drummer 3 or drum machines from Komplete Kontrol, but those didn’t have what I was looking for. So I turned to Splice and found some really awesome synthwave drum samples to use! It took a little more time to write my patterns since I’m used to blocking MIDI for drums, but I’m thrilled with how they turned out! While the groove is simple, it hits hard and is so crisp, which is exactly what I wanted!
As for the video, I thought about using my floodlights for this one, but opted to keep learning about the color grading in DaVinci Resolve. Sometimes the floodlights are a little too harsh, and I just wanted a splash of color on the different parts, but nothing too intense.

Oh boy was this a journey to make a video for... But lets talk about the music first.
Months ago when I started learning how to mess with chiptune sounds, I played the opening chords of this tune and thought, Woah this is super cool and reminds me a lot of Ace Attorney. After my lesson on Super Audio Boy stuff, I got to work on this tune immediately!
I wanted to channel the energy of standing in a courtroom as you wait for the trial to start. I was definitely inspired by Ace Attorney music and 8bitMusicTheorys video on Ace Attorney orchestrations.
I know this isnt a long tune, but it was a fun way to really dive into chiptune stuff! This was my first jab at a full on chiptune track a few months ago and Im super happy with the result! It really got me to look at composition differently since the chiptune sounds are very different than my typical piano, winds, and vocal sounds.
As for the video, Ive been traveling so much, and didnt have time to film a video for this. So I thought about doing a visualization of the MIDI as you see here! However, the software was not super cooperative for me and took quite a bit from 2 friends to troubleshoot. It ended up not working on my end, so a huge thank you to Maxotunes for doing the MIDI visualization and most of the video stuff!
