Here's my video game original synthwave composition Spacewave! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!

Last week I was struggling to create any new music, so I spent a lot of time delving into older mixes or unreleased projects to see what I would do differently in terms of mixing and productions. It reminded me how far I’ve come in terms of production and how I want to keep pushing compositionally in terms of different genres. I was getting a little worried I wouldn’t have something done for today, but I asked a friend what style of music they’d wanna see me tackle next, and they said Synthwave.
Apart from playing saxophone on someone’s synthwave track, I’ve never really done anything with synthwave music. I do enjoy listening to it a lot though! It really just transports you somewhere different and really pushes the concept of space in a mix.
So I quickly got to work after listening to some synthwave music from different playlists. There aren’t too many layers to this track, but getting the balance right was really difficult. I played a lot with automating certain fx throughout the track, both the individual instruments as well as the mastering chain.
Two of my biggest inspirations for this track were VanilluxePavilion’s synthwave cover of the Regi Battle theme and Foolish Heart sung by Nyanners. They both hit really hard and have a simple drum beat that works so well! It allows all the other elements to shine throughout the tracks.
For my drums, I took a different approach than usual. Typically, I use drum VSTs like Superior Drummer 3 or drum machines from Komplete Kontrol, but those didn’t have what I was looking for. So I turned to Splice and found some really awesome synthwave drum samples to use! It took a little more time to write my patterns since I’m used to blocking MIDI for drums, but I’m thrilled with how they turned out! While the groove is simple, it hits hard and is so crisp, which is exactly what I wanted!
As for the video, I thought about using my floodlights for this one, but opted to keep learning about the color grading in DaVinci Resolve. Sometimes the floodlights are a little too harsh, and I just wanted a splash of color on the different parts, but nothing too intense.

Oh boy was this a journey to make a video for... But lets talk about the music first.
Months ago when I started learning how to mess with chiptune sounds, I played the opening chords of this tune and thought, Woah this is super cool and reminds me a lot of Ace Attorney. After my lesson on Super Audio Boy stuff, I got to work on this tune immediately!
I wanted to channel the energy of standing in a courtroom as you wait for the trial to start. I was definitely inspired by Ace Attorney music and 8bitMusicTheorys video on Ace Attorney orchestrations.
I know this isnt a long tune, but it was a fun way to really dive into chiptune stuff! This was my first jab at a full on chiptune track a few months ago and Im super happy with the result! It really got me to look at composition differently since the chiptune sounds are very different than my typical piano, winds, and vocal sounds.
As for the video, Ive been traveling so much, and didnt have time to film a video for this. So I thought about doing a visualization of the MIDI as you see here! However, the software was not super cooperative for me and took quite a bit from 2 friends to troubleshoot. It ended up not working on my end, so a huge thank you to Maxotunes for doing the MIDI visualization and most of the video stuff!

This is one of my favorite songs from the Pokémon R/S/E OST! It was meant to be a woodwind cover haha! I always love working with Brooke! Its so much fun to mix together the woodwinds and create really cool colors and sounds!
Its fun to work with the different textures and gives more opportunity to learn about chamber writing!
The actual Abandoned Ship is a creepy area, but the music isnt super creepy! I wanted to make it a bit creepier haha! I added a little intro with sustained chords, but also added an effect to make it sound like its underwater since you dive around to explore the Abandoned Ship!
I think in ORAS, the Abandoned Ship is a lot creepier because theres a legendary Pokémon you can get there, I think.
This track also reminds me of Sealed Chamber from RSE, which is another great song!
Im glad I got to work with Brooke again and combine the woodwind powers!

I have been playing A LOT of Xenoblade the past few weeks. I never played the game and having fun getting to explore and figure out everything. I dont know how much more of the game I have, but its such an awesome game!
I had heard Satorl Marsh before I played the game, but the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. I wanted to channel the effervescent quality into the cover. I know this cover is very straightforward and close to the original. But I wanted to highlight the original style and just bring a bit of my style to it in terms of instrumentation and the mix.
The mix was super difficult because I had a specific vision. And that meant a lot of rerecording. Ultimately, Im happy with it and Im excited to cover more Xenoblade stuff in the future! Theres quite a list haha!
June has been a hectic month and I found it best to channel my emotions into the covers. As things have been stressful, doing ambient, more relaxed music helped me relax and process things better.

I have wanted to cover music from RWBY for so flipping long! Im so excited I finally decided to do it!
I have been watching RWBY for years now and so much of the music is incredible!
This song was definitely something different for me in a few ways! For one, the style is nothing like what I do, but it was so cool to put together! It required a lot of chest voice singing, which I am not accustomed to. It hurt to talk for a day after recording haha! Also, the harmonic layout of the song was interesting because of how the chords were voiced so tight, but still really open!
I definitely couldnt have done this cover with Sammy! Sammy did such a fantastic job with this and really made it his own! Unfortunately, he couldnt send me video for this cover, but he did all the guitar parts and drums for this cover!
This cover has been quite a process since I started right after my laptop got messed up, and it definitely motivated me to keep working despite a really large setback.

This song has been a favorite of mine for awhile, but I couldnt seem to figure out how to arrange it. Definitely pulled out a few new techniques and skills for this one!
This song is super simple, harmonically speaking, so I wanted to push myself to do some reharmonization to give the tune some extra flavor and spice! I didnt want to break up the flow/structure of the song, so I thought about how I could change up the interludes between the choruses. I wanted to do an electric piano solo since its so fitting for the tune, but also incorporated a woodwind soli. I wanted to challenge myself with having the soli compliment the vocals since it comes back at the end. I also wanted some strings for extra color and warmth. The two countermelodies in the strings and woodwinds ended up working really well together, despite writing them at two separate times. And I wasnt originally planning on layering them together along with the vocals.
I could not stop smiling working on this cover. I really pushed myself to try new things and am super happy with the video!

Wow has August been busy... Theres been so much happening so I havent had as much time to work on music this month.
Calming Rain was actually a project I had started months ago, but never finished. I had recorded the bulk of it in March, but it still felt unfinished. So I decided to open it back up and take another listen. I enjoyed it more than I remembered and felt so motivated and inspired to finish this track up! So I added those little flute trills, and all of the drums. I think the drums really just added another depth and created such a cool flow to round this out as a lo-fi track.
I was really inspired by the song Gentle Rain from Mother 3 and a remix of it I had heard from VanilluxePavilion. I really wanted to channel that chill, laid back vibe for this composition to shine.
As for the video, I didnt have access to my cameras the past week or so, and I had to figure out another visual for the video. There quite a few things I tried, but ended up with a MIDI visualizer! Which Ive tried to use in the past and it was definitely a bit difficult. But I found a new one called AlmamPlayer, which is compatible on Windows and Mac! It was really fun to change the note hits to raindrops since this song is all about rain!
I didnt include every part in MIDI form since many parts were in a similar range already and would have been a bit messy. Also a bit time consuming haha.
Most of the time, Ill do filmed videos, but this months compositions will include MIDI visuals or something else until Im all set up again with my stuff!

In the words of insaneintherainmusic, Rowan be GROOVIN. Rowan’s Theme is one I’ve held close for most of my life. There’s just this certain feeling I get when I listen to it that I don’t get with other professor themes. A lot of them are great, but there’s this serious, excited feeling to Rowan’s Theme for me. A friend of mine asked me recently if I had covered Rowan’s Theme, and I hadn’t! I had thought about it several times, but either couldn’t come up with an idea or didn’t enjoy the idea as I attempted to bring it to life.
I recently heard PJ Morton’s version of How Deep Is Your Love (it’s amazing, go listen to it). I loved the intimate chamber string ensemble paired with vocals, keys, bass, and drums. It wasn’t a lot in terms of instrumentation, but so resonant and full. I loved the warmth of the strings and pretty much everything about it. When I heard it, I said that’s the kind of music I wanna make. Warm, fun, and resonates on so many levels.
That track was definitely a huge inspiration for the direction I chose to take this cover in. I really wanted to play with acoustic and electric groupings in this. Alternating between grand piano and electric piano in certain sections and pairing electric piano with upright bass and grand piano with electric bass. This track also gave me chance to work more with my string programming in getting that clear sound, but still full. And lastly… drums. Drums and I have a tough time. But I learned a lot about really thinking about what I want my kit to sound like and playing with lots of what Superior Drummer 3 has to offer haha.
I had to think about the video for this quite a bit. I didn’t have as much time to polish this cover up as others and a lot of the parts are programmed. I played most of them on the piano, but I wanted to work more with color and particle speed to convey energy and nostalgia. I’m incredibly excited for the DPPt remakes later this year. DPPt has been my favorite Pokémon game since I played it. I wanted to use color to convey aging/nostalgia since we’re getting this remake!
Lastly, I gotta thank VGR. I was struggling to come up with an ending for this cover and he had asked to hear what I was currently working on. I sent him a draft and he mentioned he could hear original lyrics that dealt with nostalgia. After he said that, the words came pretty quickly. I thought about things I would hear after being away from a place or group of people that were important to me. Gen 4 will always hold a special place in my heart, and I’m glad to finally be doing the music some justice.

It is my favorite time of year! I absolutely adore the fall and always have, and one thing I look forward to every year, are all the fall flavors. They really are some of the best! So I wanted to write a song that captured that feeling on a brisk fall morning where you’re waiting to make a cup of warm coffee or tea. It really just hits different in the fall.
As for the instrumentation, I wanted to keep it fairly simple. I mostly wanted to focus on the vocals and capture the color of vocals like the colors of the changing leaves in autumn.
While the composition came together rather quickly for this one, the mixing definitely pushed me. I worked with instruments I’m very familiar with, however I struggled a lot with this mix. The biggest issue was that nothing was sitting in the same space, and my usual reverbs felt either way too strong or lacked presence. I kept redoing the mix and not noting much of a shift. I actually ended up changing how I do my reverb and the plugin I use after almost 4 years of my current method. I learned about sidechaining reverb to my vocals recently, and shifted from creating sends for Early Reflections, Late Reflections, and Longverb, to 2 sends for Room and Character. While I’m still wrapping my head around it, I think it definitely helped bring this track to life!
As for the video, I wanted to capture the chill fall feel, and what’s more fall than falling leaves and cozy clothes? Filming the video went super smoothly, but much like the audio, there was a pattern. I had made a falling fruit asset for my Suika main theme cover months ago, and switched out the fruit assets for leaves. It looked really nice, however, it didn’t work for most of this video. Because this video is so vocal heavy, I had to redo the falling leaves so they didn’t fall in the center of the video. However, this created another issue… While the center of shots weren’t obscured anymore, the vocal harmony shots in the upper corner were. So, I opted to change it around, having the fall leaves just during the piano intro and outro, and playing with light beams and that sort of golden/orange hue we get throughout fall for the rest of the video.
While there were a lot of hiccups throughout this process, I’m really happy with how this track turned out. I just wanted to do something fun and light-hearted for my favorite time of year and what I enjoy most about it. Hope you enjoy Fall Flavors~
