Here's my lofi video game composition Ebb and Flow from my NEW ALBUM Lofi to Scale to! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make compositions that combine two of my favorite things!

I am SO excited to finally release Lofi to Scale to! I essentially started working on it right after I released Noodles of a Game Dreamer last year. I really wanted to create something that wasn't your ordinary lofi album.

As an educator, scales are one of the most important fundamentals that are often overlooked or misused. I've seen scales be used as a obligatory tool more often than not. I didn't know why we really practice scales until my final year of undergrad and it completely changed the way I looked at scales.

I wanted to think of an alternative way to have people approach their scales that didn't feel so dry or mundane. Scales are part of music and should be played alongside other music sometimes. I wanted to lightly outline the learning process through this album and what experience through it. Excitement, anxiety, frustration, accomplishment, and more. It comes and goes in waves and it’s important to acknowledge that these are all valid and part of the process.

As for Ebb and Flow, this was actually one of the last tracks that I wrote for the album, but it’s one of my favorites! I was definitely inspired by ‘Where Does This Ocean Go' by Yoko Kanno. I love the flow of that space and how it feels like gentle waves moving through the ocean. It’s such a beautiful track and I wanted to find a way to channel that same feeling into this track. I’ve always liked the sound of Eb Major, but haven’t written many songs in that key in my career.

It was really fun to utilize the same progression throughout the piece, but play with how frequent the chord changes were depending on the section. I had analyzed a piece that played around with the same chord progression changing at different frequencies, and thought it would be fun to try it myself!

Because the track was so smooth, I wanted to play with harder textural elements like the mallets and more piercing synth sounds to draw a strong contrast. I tried to apply that to the mixing as well, playing with spacing to create contrast from the smooth textures and instruments.

As for the video, I wanted to capture the low fidelity, old school feel! Instead of the typical 16x9 aspect ratio, I wanted to do a 4x3 video to capture the feeling of watching something in the 90s or early 2000s. Plus it almost made it feel like an old instructional video on how to play your scales!
