The mechanism for a Madelung reaction which involves the intramolecular cyclization of N-acylated-o-alkylanilines in the presence of a strong base at elevated temperatures in order to produce the indole product. The exact mechanism of the Madelung indole process is not known, however, an intramolecular Claisen type condensation is likely to be involved in the process.
