Lybrook Community Ministries goes back to its beginnings in 1952 as the Lybrook Navajo Mission, formed by the General Board of the Church of the Brethren. Its focus responded to the special needs of the area, and included providing a source of safe potable water, sharing the Gospel, and providing public education and medical care. Meeting numerous community and family needs was also of great importance as well as the maintaining of a cemetery.
Lybrook Community Ministries, was formed in 2009 to continue the work of Lybrook Navajo Mission and to bring centralized leadership and operations to the Lybrook Dine' community.
Brethren Voices interviewed Kim and Jim Therrien, Directors of the Lybrook Community Ministries at the 2018 Church of the Brethren Annual Conference. They have served at the mission since August of 2013. Their "calling," which they share, is truly an amazing story, taking them from Indiana to the mission, located near Cuba, New Mexico.
The needs of the community were first identified and discussed with Jim and Kim. Since then, trust has been built and the Lybrook Community has worked to make improvements to gardening, water preservation and the care of livestock. The mission encourages the nurturing of the Dine' culture for the elderly and young. It also serves as a special place for learning tour groups to gain insight about the Lybrook Community and Navajo Heritage.
