We interviewed Katie Schreckengast in 2012, before she was Miss Pennsylvania. We should have known that it was just a matter of time before she would become Miss Pennsylvania.
Brethren Voices featured Katie Schreckengast in September 2012 and now she is Miss Pennsylvania and will be competing in the Miss America Pageant, September 10, in Atlantic City.
In September 2012, she had competed in the Pennsylvania Outstanding Teen Pageant. With this program we revisit the program with Katie and provide an update of some of her activities during the past five years. Having graduated from Palmyra High School in Palmyra, PA, Katie has continued her education at Penn State University, majoring in broadcast journalism. She has continued her interest in music, playing the alto sax in the Penn State marching band, the Penn State Blue Band.
Years before, as one of the small children of the Palmyra Church of the Brethren, Katie and her friends felt hat Jesus would want to assist hungry people who came by the church and needed food. As a result of the concern of the youth, an emergency food program was started and later, the Caring Cupboard was established in Palmyra, Pennsylvania by 25 area churches.
In 2013, Katie won the Pennsylvania Outstanding Teen Pageant. This past June, Katie won the Miss Pennsylvania Pageant and will represent Pennsylvania in the Miss America Pageant to be held in Atlantic City, September 10, 2017.
As Miss Pennsylvania, Katie has been traveling the State of Pennsylvania, speaking at many of her engagements. As Miss Pennsylvania she has been sharing her platform, advocating the importance of adoptions.
In an accompanying story, David Steele, General Secretary of the Church of the Brethren is also featured in this edition of Brethren Voices. Steele has been holding listening sessions in church districts around the denomination. The meetings are a way for him to listen closely to people within the church, and an opportunity for church members to meet the general secretary.
