"March for Our Lives" was the student-led demonstration in support of tighter gun controls that took place in Washington, D.C. and over 800 locations throughout the United States and around the world. The event followed the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, which was described by many, as a possible tipping point for gun control legislation.
"Brethren Voices" joined the "March for Our Lives" with other Brethren to support the youth at one of the 800 sites. John Jones of Myrtle Point, Oregon marches with the walkers to get their thoughts about the event. Over 12,000 marched at this event and all ages of participants were interviewed. Students and parents are extremely concerned about these shooting events which have been occurring in schools, stores, theaters, shopping centers, etc. No person is safe from these incidents of gun violence. In the studio, John is interviewed by "Brethren Voices" host, Brent Carlson.
From its beginnings, historically, the Church of the Brethren has always been deeply concerned by the violence. More recently, in 1999, the Annual Conference of the Church of the Brethren, in light of these disturbing realities, recommitted to its heritage of nonviolence as modeled by the life and teachings of Jesus and our mission of continuing this vital work.
It came at a time when we saw "extensive violence and violent images in our culture. We have become passive of this culture of violence. For young people in the United States, it’s pretty easy to acquire a firearm."
