Rare visit of Lufthansa's Airbus A340-600 to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) Mumbai.

This flight (LH756) from Frankfurt (FRA) to Mumbai (BOM) is usually operated by Lufthansa's Boeing 747-400 or Boeing 747-8i. But on 5th November, 2018 Lufthansa sent their Airbus A340-600, and luckily we were on the tarmac at the same time too.

The flight was operated by 10 year old airframe, D-AIHZ. She was delivered to Lufthansa in May, 2009 and is named after the famous German City, Leipzig.
.
D-AIHZ had "FC Bayern München" special livery from July 2017 to March 2018. She is powered by 4 Rolls Royce RR Trent 500 Engines, which produce 56,000 lbf of thrust each.

Over the years, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, Etihad and Qatar Airways operated their Airbus A340-600s to Mumbai. But now, only Lufthansa operates them to Mumbai, that too very rarely.

Airbus A340-600 was designed to replace early-generation Boeing 747s, its capable of carrying 379 passengers in a three-class cabin layout 13,900 km (7,500 nmi). It provides similar passenger capacity to a 747 but with 25 percent more cargo volume, and at lower trip and seat costs.

First flight of the A340-600 was made on 23 April 2001. Virgin Atlantic began commercial services in August 2002.

The A340-600 is 12 m (39 ft 4.4 in) longer than an Airbus A340-300, more than 4 m (13 ft 1.5 in) longer than the Boeing 747-400 and 2.3 m (7 ft 6.6 in) longer than the Airbus A380, and has two emergency exit doors added over the wings.

It held the record for the world's longest commercial aircraft until the first flight of the Boeing 747-8 in February 2010. 97 Airbus A340-600s were made by Airbus and as of April, 2019 ~40 are still active.

The variant's main competitor is the Boeing 777-300ER. Airbus has replaced its A340-600 by their brand new Airbus A350-1000.

The Airbus A340-600 is a very unique aircraft. Its sheer length when seen from up-close truly blows your mind.

I really hope they keep flying for few more years and keep visiting Mumbai Airport. :)
