I love biomedical research because it combines two things that I'm very passionate about. One is continual exploration of how our body works and the other is the impact that it has on people's lives.
My name is Loren Erickson and I am an associate professor in the department of microbiology, immunology, and cancer biology, as well as an investigator in the Carter Immunology Center.
I study B cells, which are part of the immune system, which make antibodies that recognize pathogens and protect us against infections. However, in certain individuals, B cells mistakenly recognize harmless substances as dangerous and develop antibodies that cause autoimmunity and allergy, and we're interested in understanding why this occurs. By studying B cells in these diseases, we hope to understand the underlying causes by which they make antibodies that cause autoimmunity and allergy, and we can harness this information to develop therapeutic strategies to treat them.
