Movie scenery on this island wasn't exclusive to Ryan's Daughter! it's everywhere, and people are a part of it, their character and that of the land shaping each other. While filming the large seal colony off Ballykinler on the coast of South Down, I came across this retired local guy who takes his ponies down to the shore to walk, run and graze. It reminded me instantly of those frontiersmen, the 'Overmountain Men' in the American Colonies of the 1700's, who went on to win independence and become the cowboys of the new frontier in the 1800's as the nation pushed further West into unknown territory. There, so many Western movies of our childhoods were inspired. Seraphim Falls, one of the best modern Westerns I have ever seen featured two Irish actors - Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan. Several decades previous, Clint Eastwood, Irish American actor, produced the iconic The Outlaw Josey Wales, featuring a confederate Missouri veteran outrunning and outgunning Union soldiers, bounty hunters and bandits. " In 1996, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. " Eastwood's research and attention to detail won critical acclaim - not least for his use of accurate regional dialect culminating in the 'Granny scene' at the rope ferry river crossing. "I reckon so..."
