The city on the Mersey River was one of the most significant cities of the British Empire in the 18th century. At that time, forty percent of world trade was conducted through Liverpool. Gradually, however, the importance of Liverpool continued to decline, and by the 1980s, it became the poorest large city in Europe. Today, the city is regaining hope and new jobs are being created.
