The civilizations of its settlers and conquerors from Mesopotamia, Persia, India and Europe have been deposited like sedimentary rock. 160,000 barrows are unmistakable witnesses to its long history and make Bahrain the largest necropolis in the world to this day. The fortress of Qal' at al-Bahrain towers above everything. It is the crowning peak of the cultural mountain that the Portuguese built on the mythical island in the 16th century. From the island, those in power controlled the sea trade route between East Asia, India and the Near East. And they coveted the dates, the water from their wells, and, above all, its precious pearls. Because they were considered the most beautiful in the world.
