In the beginning, it was just a bold idea of the architect Alberto de Palacio. When the idea transformed into a massive monument of iron and steel, it became a sensation, as the world had never seen such a unique construction for crossing a river: To this day, the bridge structure "Puente Vizcaya," which began operation in 1893 in Portugalete near Bilbao, remains one of the biggest attractions in the Basque Country. Around the clock, its gondola, suspended from a bridge, floats over the Nervión River, transporting people and vehicles back and forth.
The fact that the construction is unique is also evident in the linguistic helplessness: In German, it is called a "Schwebefähre" (suspension ferry). In addition to its pragmatic utility, according to Palacio, the gigantic steel truss structure was intended to set an "elegant and grandiose accent" on the Bay of Biscay. He wanted his engineering marvel to create a symbol for an entire region, an aesthetic illustration of the industrial boom triggered by the expanding iron industry in the area around Bilbao. He succeeded in doing so in a remarkable way.
