In 1659, the French paid 92,000 thalers and a few barrels of brandy for the Île Saint-Louis in the mouth of the Senegal River. The island became the French bastion on the trade route between India and South America. But the French who lived there suffered from the climate, yellow fever epidemics, intestinal diseases and malaria. That is why the island was also called the “grave of the Europeans”. There was consolation only for those who got rich quickly or got married. By marrying according to local custom, local women received social recognition and the French occupiers received temporary comforts. In the 18th century, their children formed an up-and-coming mixed-race aristocracy.
With this, Saint-Louis developed into a city with its own unique architecture and became the capital of the French colonial empire in West Africa until the 19th century. In 1958 the Senegalese capital was moved to Dakar. Since then, Saint-Louis has been gradually reclaimed by the desert sand.
