You see if you are going to believe in the literal "truth" of the bible and take it literally then literally is the only way that you can read it.
In this episode, god is powerless to stop his kids coming down to earth and knocking up the fair maidens that they did find and as can be expected from the all powerful, ever present, all knowing deity with a perfect plan, while he wasn't around to see what was going on, without him knowing, things don't quite go as expected.
So God decides to throw biggest hissy fit in history and start over from scratch and instructs his good mate Noah to build a big boat and go collect animals, especially cows, because god wants to try out his new creation...
