You see if you are going to believe in the literal "truth" of the bible and take it literally then literally is the only way that you can read it.
In this episode our hero Abram embarks on an excellent adventure, setting off into the land of the Canaanites and ending up in Egypt where he meets the Pharaoh.
Due to one of those misunderstandings that are just so simple to make Pharaoh ends up on the wrong end of the first of many biblical plagues for some reason or other and he suspects that Abram might have something to do with it.
I suppose this could have been cleared up right at the beginning if he had asked Abram how well he knew his sister.
