In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Renaissance artist’s death, Palazzo Vecchio is celebrating Leonardo da Vinci with an exhibition dedicated to selected folios from his Codex Atlanticus.
Although he died in the castle of Clos Lucé (France) in 1519, Leonardo Da Vinci was always proud of his Florentine origins, and he felt deeply connected to Florence until his last days. As a tribute to his multiple talents and timeless genius, Florence's Palazzo Vecchio hosts from March 29th to June 24th the exhibition 'Leonardo da Vinci & Florence: Selected Pages from the Codex Atlanticus'.
The Codex Atlanticus is originally made of 119 folios featuring Leonardo da Vinci's writings and drawings on multiple themes: of these, 12 are on display at the exhibition. These folios were written between 1470 and 1519, and they vividly describe the intense relationship between the genius and Florence.
From his childhood memories to his correspondences with the major figures of the period (just to name a few: Botticelli, Verrocchio, Medici and Sforza families), these folios shed a light on Leonardo's incredible life and artworks. The Codex Atlanticus has been preserved for years at Biblioteca Ambrosiana (Milan), therefore this is an extraordinary opportunity to get acquainted with Leonardo da Vinci's heritage, right in the city where he started his carreer. The exhibition is curated by Cristina Acidini, a renowned Florentine art historian, and it also includes the painting 'Busto del Redentore' by Gian Giacomo Caprotti - known as Salaino - a presumed Leonardo da Vinci's disciple.
