Leed-Himmel Industries, a custom aluminum manufacturer in Hamden, is closing after more than a century in business. Owner Howard Goldfarb says rising costs, including electricity, health insurance, business insurance and local taxes, contributed to the decision. He said tariffs brought higher raw material prices and cash flow problems, calling them the “final nail in the coffin.”
Goldfarb also pointed to Connecticut's minimum wage and public benefits costs on electric bills as factors affecting businesses. He says he is trying to sell the building to another manufacturer.
Connecticut's Department of Economic and Community Development said reliable, affordable energy is a key issue and that getting power costs under control requires a regional approach involving renewable energy, nuclear, natural gas and other energy sources.
