In this lecture, we discuss the two distinct view points of doing thermodynamics: microscopic and macroscopic views. The microscopic view point is used in statistical thermodynamics while the macroscopic view point is used in classical thermodynamics. We discuss the difference between these two approaches and also look at their advantages and disadvantages. In this course, we will follow the macroscopic view point that is used in classical thermodynamics. Finally, we give a broad overview of the need for introducing new postulates/laws of thermodynamics in the classical thermodynamics approach.
