In this lecture, we introduce the concepts of useful work and exergy. We show that for a system not in equilibrium with the surroundings, useful work can always be obtained from the system and the maximum useful work is given by the change in the availability. For a given initial state of the system, if the system undergoes a process and reaches equilibrium with the surroundings, then that maximum useful work is called the exergy. We consider the useful work by both a closed and an open system. We also discuss the concepts of irreversibility and second law efficiency.
