Pig day finally happened. We spent the whole day getting the paddock cleaned up and ready because honestly it had gotten pretty rough back there. Between the mud, the holes from what we think was a groundhog, and all the old bedding, there was a lot to do before bringing home the new piglets. Todd hauled in wood chips with the tractor while we got fresh straw spread around and finished setting up the electric fence with the solar charger.
This year we’re trying a different pig breed mix again because apparently we can never just stick with one thing. These little guys were way smaller than we expected and they definitely had no clue what hot wire was at first. Usually pigs touch it once and back up. These ones were trying to jump right over it like maniacs. Thankfully they figured it out pretty fast and after about a day they settled right in.
We also show the systems we use to make raising pigs easier around here, including our big feeder and automatic water setup. We’re big fans of working smarter whenever we can because nobody wants to hand feed pigs three times a day forever. Overall the pigs are doing great and we’re excited to raise another batch out on pasture this season.
