As a correction, the piece of steel cost me $245.85 AUD, not $300 as I say in the video
G'day everyone,
It is time to start a new major project. This is one that I have had in mind since I first got the lathe, and it all is based around replacing/remaining the cross slide. In fairness to it, there is nothing inherently wrong with it, expect for the fact that it is not very rigid. The top slide is held on by 2 x M6 bolts, and compounds are known to be a weak spot in terms of rigidity,
If I am going to replace the compound, I may as well replace the cross slide. I did this back in 2021with the mini lathe, and the results were astounding. I don't know if I will see the same level of improvement on this lathe, but I am expecting a jump in rigidity.
In this video I will begin the project by taking down a big piece of 1020 stock down to size. I will machine in the t-slots and the dovetail.
