Time to make some new gear.... literally.

I have done spur gears, free hobbed worms and face gears. Time to tackle ring gears. A proper ring gear needs a gear shaper or a gear skiving machine to make the correct involute profile. But getting close can work well for involute gears. Spur gears cut with off the shelf cutters are only an approximation of the involute profile since the gear cutters need to cut a range of gears.

Using that I will attempt to make an internal spur gear. Using the lathe as a shaper and various shop made tools. It is not lost on me that it will not be the exact involute profile, but the shape that I will be left with should be close enough that it can form a usable gearbox. We will see that once I get around to finishing the planetary gearbox.

Cheers
