🚨 SPOILER WARNING 🚨 What's up Geekly Goods fam! 🤯 Lanterns Episode 3 is incredible. Genuinely one of the best comic book TV episodes of all time. This episode completely recontextualizes John Stewart's entire origin, and I love how it tackles Blackness so directly.
J. Alphonse Nicholson did a phenomenal job as John Stewart Sr. It's genuinely powerful watching him admit he was afraid, because being Black in America already means facing danger on a daily basis. That single moment of honesty is exactly what pushed him to make John Jr. into what he believed was the perfect candidate for Green Lantern instead. I've got to give it up to Jasmine Cephas Jones as Bernadette too, she is stunning in this episode. She carries so much generational weight on her shoulders throughout every scene.
Now we know John was trained from birth to become this ring bearer, and that brings a whole different meaning to his journey. He's worked and trained his entire life just to earn this opportunity, whereas Hal was simply given the ring without having to prove anything close to that level of sacrifice. Incredible episode all around. I love what they're doing with Lanterns.
