On my final evening in the Lake District I wanted to capture a view that reminded me of where I had been based for the week whilst camping. I ventured up Side Pike, which is a tiny hill by lakeland standards, to find a viewpoint of the highlights of the valley. From Side Pike you have some cracking opportunities that take in the likes of the Langdale Pikes, Bowfell, Crinkle Crags, Pike of Blisco... the list goes on!
I set off from the National Trust campsite in Great Langdale a couple of hours before sunset with the sun on my back, soon after however the odd drop of rain was being felt. By the time I reached the top of Side Pike the wind had picked up and the rain showers were getting more frequent.
It sounds like the sort of weather that you would prefer to avoid, but it really showed me that it is during these conditions that you sometimes get the most dramatic moments, and if you are ready with your camera you can be lucky enough to capture them!
By the way - between 4:00-5:15 I am giving "advice" about going up hills for sunset (where you may well have to come down in the dark... Watching it back, I am rambling a little which I think was due to only having had a few hours sleep the night before and a long hot walk in the sun during the day! Rambling or not, some of the information I give I think is useful! Enjoy!
