Political tensions have escalated in Kolkata after a Trinamool Congress office on Camac Street was allegedly vandalised in the early hours of Thursday.
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has accused BJP workers of storming and ransacking the office. He alleged that the attackers were armed, damaged electronic equipment and that party workers’ repeated calls for police assistance went unanswered.
Banerjee termed the incident an “open defiance of the rule of law” and demanded immediate arrests and an investigation into those who allegedly planned and organised the attack.
The TMC has claimed the incident took place between around 3:30 am and 4:30 am, when Banerjee was in New Delhi. The party also alleged that office staff and security guards were assaulted and that items including printers, televisions and air purifiers were taken away.
