The Strait of Hormuz has become the flashpoint of a major US-Iran military and economic showdown. In what the US military calls its biggest wartime escort operation yet, American forces escorted 40 commercial vessels carrying around 18 million barrels of oil through the strategic waterway.
At the same time, US forces reportedly struck Iranian military targets, defended against drone attacks and neutralised anti-ship cruise missiles. Nearly 60 Iranian targets around the Strait were also hit, including radar sites, air defence systems, maritime assets and communications facilities.
President Donald Trump has claimed the US now controls the Strait, while Washington continues its naval blockade of Iranian ports. But the shipping industry remains cautious about sending vessels through the crucial oil route.
