China is now viewed more favorably than the United States in more countries than ever before, according to a major Pew Research Center global survey. But does that mean China is replacing America as the world’s leading superpower? Pew’s 2026 Global Attitudes Survey, based on more than 42,000 adults across 36 countries, reveals a striking shift in global perceptions of the US and China. In 25 of 36 countries, China receives a more favorable rating than the United States. US favorability has fallen sharply in several traditional American allies, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea and the UK, while China’s favorability has risen in countries such as Italy and Spain. But there is a major twist. When people are asked which country they would rather have strong economic ties with, the United States still leads in most countries surveyed. And when it comes to security and alliances, America maintains an even stronger advantage. So is American hegemony really ending? Is China becoming the world’s preferred superpower? Or is the global order entering a new era where countries increasingly hedge between Washington and Beijing?
