Here is a second Star Slide Sprint! event—I’m guessing that like the ones for Smash Bros., there will be a year’s worth of biwekly ones, then they’ll repeat, though we got our first releating gimmick-based one. You have the same gimmick of the Star Slide (the slipstream mechanic where you speed up by being directly behind another racer) being greatly more powerful than normal, leading to unpredictable races as long as everyone’s reasonably close together. And like before, this is oplayed on Air Ride (though a Top Ride one would be interesting.) Of course, if someone’s NOT clse to someone else, either very far ahead or, worse, very far behind, they’ll keep on drifting (no pun intended) further and further away, which is no fun in a racing game.

Set over late June 2026, the rewardsdon’t have a particular theme, though you do have Splatoon-looking splats for license stickers and, oddly, “Protagonist” and “Reincarnation” as the suffixes for Street Names, evoking isekai stories. (My favorite isekai is A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.)

00:16 - Match #1
Air Ride
Course: Magma Flows
Character: Gooey
Machine: Tank Star
Magma Flows is my worst track looking at my hstory with online races here, and even I was able to not only get 3rd place overall, but finish within a half second of 1st place and actually be in the lead for portions of both laps. And the Tank Star is a pretty difficult machine to use because of its nonstandard steering. I got thrust upwards with Gooey’s special though.

02:35 - Match #2
Air Ride
Course: Nebula Belt
Character: Kirby (Green)
Machine: Paper Star
Nebula Belt is such a plain racetrack that I also rarely do well in this one: people zoom on way ahead and I can’t really do much. Honstly, even with the enhanced Star Slides, this is what happened here: even getting a Missile was not enough to gain on the people n the top three positions as everyone else faded into the distance.

Of course, the bodacious gliding capability of the Paper Star means I’m disadvantaged gliding in the air this time around, as it means I’m not getting the boost from following people’s trails.

04:59 - Match #3
Air Ride
Course: Waveflow Waters
Character: King Dedede
Machine: Warp Star
This is probably the sort of race they wanted: everybody being pretty close together at all times. You can see how in the second lap me landing a ramp wrong put me from 2nd into 6th, and how I was in 1st in the home stretch, turning that last left turn, and dropped to 5th afterwards, with the results showing 1st and last place within one second of each other. (And the person in last has won a race outright three times in that session!)

07:31 - Match #4
Air Ride
Course: Fantasy Meadows
Character: Magolor
Machine: Warp Star
I think one of the players got disconnected, as it seems we got a computer player in the blue slot. ONe of the results of playing with such a high top speed, by the way, is actually making it into the “secret path above the cave” that you need to fill out the missions checklist. I did it on the first and third laps, though not intentionally.

08:50 - Match #5
Air Ride
Course: Machine Passage
Character: Rocky
Machine: Wagon Star
Not being able to boost doesn’t mean much when there’s another mechanic here far stronger than a boost. Frankly, I’m surprised we didn’t see more Wagon Stars in use here. Would’ve been nice if I could stay on the upper path at the beginning of a lap, but it wasn’t a huge setback enough to catch up seeing people’s Star Slides.

10:56 - Match #6
Air Ride
Course: Steamgust Forge
Character: Taranza
Machine: Jet Star
I think this is the very first time a special attacksent me from 5th to 1st. Of cours, as you might have seen in tis video’s race in Waveflow Waters, being in 1st on the home stretch does not necessarily mean you’ll actually place 1st, as there is no one’s Star Slides for you to boost on as the people behind you rapidly gain on you. (Unless you’re so far out in front that they can’t catch your slipstream.)

14:11 - Match #7
Air Ride
Course: Airtopia Ruins
Character: Marx
Machine: Transform Star
What happened at the end there? It felt like I got a 1st place finish stolen from me.
