I figured I’d also need a single battle team this season to reap the benefits of rising up the ladder there too, so a few days later, I was able to assemble this team—though parts of it were already being made around the same time as the Aurorus Team. This team’s origins began in Pokémon Shield, where I was breeding Espurr for the Meowstic Team and got a female shiny one. I was looking for a male one specifically for that team, so I sent her to Pokémon HOME and waited to see if I could find a place for her. Several years later, we got Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and with that, Mega Meowstic, so here we are with a shiny Meowstic who can Mega Evolve, whom you’ll see right away in this video.
At about the same time that I got a shiny Amaura in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, whom you’ll see as the eponymous Pokémon in the Aurorus Team, I also got a shiny Tyrunt, who turns up in this team in the fourth slot.
The games in parentheses are where I originally obtained that Pokémon.
FORRETRESS (Pokémon Scarlet) - Forrest - from “forest”
VICTREEBEL (Pokémon Legends: Z-A) - Victoria - from “Victreebel”; also based on the Victreebel’s name I used in Pokémon Battle Revolution
MEOWSTIC (Pokémon Shield) - Shirley - from “surely”; also named after Shirley the Medium from Courage the Cowardly Dog and Sharley, a fortune-teller from One Piece
TYRANTRUM (Pokémon Legends: Z-A) - Rex - from “Tyrannosaurus rex”
BASCULEGION (Pokémon Champions) - Dolores - from “dolor”
TOUCANNON (Pokémon Scarlet) - Samantha - named after Toucan Sam, mascot of Froot Loops cereal
The female Basculegion turns up from time to time; having seen the male one a lot in Scarlet and Violet, I had been considering the female one for a team for some time. The female Basculegion seems more commonly used in Champions than in Scarlet and Violet.

Of course, you’re allotted one Mega Evolution per match, so despite me bringing out two Pokémon that could Mega Evolve, only one of them would actually do so. That one would be Meowstic—and she lasted a lot longer than I expected, as my opponent was caught up in setup moves (though I was doing some setup myself, and the Sp. Defense boost from Calm Mind came in handy).
It seems if the opponent is playing in another language, and their Pokémon are not nicknamed, Champions will translate them to your language’s Pokémon names.

Of course, I picked the wrong Pokémon during Team Preview…though I expected Fire Blast out of Dragonite, as it can learn such a move and is good against Ice- and Steel-types it would likely face a lot, and Mega Dragonite has a higher Sp. Attack than physical Attack. This one used Air Slash though.
When Meowstic Mega Evolves, all of the stat boosts go into Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, and Speed. That means that, ordinarily, it gains a tremendous advantage against special attackers (though at the cost of being just as frail against physical attackers). That’s why I was pretty surprised at how much Rotom’s Overheat did, even though I myself use Overheat in the Aurorus Team.

This is the first match showcased where I Mega Evolved Victreebel instead. I felt, in this match, that there was something missing from Mega Victreebel’s intended way to play, as it has the Ability Innards Out, previously found on Pyukumuku. I think I figured it out later on, but at this point, I was still figuring things out with this team. As a result, Mega Victreebel felt as awkward to use as the base form. It sure looks funny though.
Innards Out, by the way, takes effect upon the user fainting and reduces the HP of the Pokémon who fainted it by the amount of damage done to make the user faint. Hence, this can be quite the devious trap if up against a big hitter without a lot of HP.
