In this video Mr Martin Drage, lead clinician for pancreatic transplantation at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, demonstrates how ‘Mirococept’ is perfused into the #kidney.
‘Mirococept’, developed with the MRC Centre for Transplantation at King’s College London, belongs to a new class of drug designed to ‘paint’ the inside of kidneys before #transplantation, to protect from immediate damage caused by the #immunesystem.
It is part of a clinical trial (Empirikal) currently running at King’s College London, based at Guy’s Hospital, which hopes to show that, compared to kidneys prepared for transplantation in the standard way, the addition of Mirococept allows more kidneys to function normally within the first week.
The drug mops up some of the inflammatory proteins that start to appear when a kidney is put into a recipient. This reduces the damage to the kidney when it has its new blood supply. Anything that reduces damage to the kidney helps it to work better, helps it to work more quickly, and improves the long term function of the kidney.
