Kevin Costner 'loved' John Mulaney's 'Field of Dreams' Oscars bit: 'He was a genius'

Kevin Costner will attend and compliment your "Field of Dreams" awards presentation segment if you build a superb one.

The "Yellowstone" actor praised comedian John Mulaney for his lengthy joke about the 1989 baseball movie at last month's Oscars in an interview with People that was published on Sunday.

To quote Costner, "I couldn't believe that guy," the magazine said. "Wow. I gave it another watch."

Mulaney humorously went into considerable length about the plot of "Field of Dreams" while presenting the Oscar for best sound, noting "If you build it, he will come" as one of the greatest lines in movie history. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the film in which Costner featured as farmer Ray Kinsella.

The man played by Costner "mows down corn, and then there is a field, and then he's like, 'I'm going to watch ghosts play baseball,'" At the Oscars, Mulaney made jokes. 'You want to pay your mortgage?' the bank asks. "Well, I'm going to watch ghosts play baseball," he replied.

Mulaney said, "I love 'Field of Dreams,' that should win best picture, though they'll probably go with one this year," after summarizing the film's narrative.

Costner told People that he was "very touched by" Mulaney's remarks and that "I should talk to him because I was really impressed." He was exceptionally intelligent. I adored his work."

In the days following the Oscars, Costner responded to Mulaney's skit by saying on Instagram that it was "not a bad summary."

More than 900,000 people have watched the official YouTube video of Mulaney's "Field of Dreams" Oscars skit, and many of the comments encourage the comedian to present the ceremony in 2025. The comedic "New in Town" star and former writer for "Saturday Night Live" previously hosted the Governors Awards in January. Her well-received monologue was interpreted by some fans as a tryout for the role of Oscar presenter.

"It's an absolute no-brainer to get an incredibly famous comedian who actually enjoys and respects the craft of filmmaking to host a film awards show," a comment read. "He’s gotta host the full show next time."

Jimmy Kimmel, the four-time host of the Oscars, revealed on his program that he has been requested to emcee the event again in 2025 and that he "might" do so, if only to spite former President Donald Trump, who referred to him as the worst emcee in the history of the festival.
