Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon 2’ Set for Venice Film Festival World Premiere After Pulled U.S. Release

After its U.S. release was canceled, Kevin Costner's "Horizon: An American Saga— Chapter Two" is scheduled to have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.

The second part of the Western epic was canceled earlier this month from its scheduled August 16 release in American theaters after the first installment of "Horizon," which had a $100 million budget, only made $11 million on its opening weekend.

"Chapter Two," starring Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Danny Huston, and Costner in both director and star roles, will premiere on the Lido outside of competition on September 7. The first "Horizon" film, which debuted at Cannes in May to a seven-minute standing ovation, will be screened earlier that day in advance of the international premiere.

The American West's settlement and expansion during the Civil War are depicted in depth in "Horizon: An American Saga," a film by New Line Cinema. Apart from directing and starring, Costner collaborated on the screenplay "The Explorers Guild" with Jon Baird and led production through Territory Pictures.

favored by Variety.

"Showing 'Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter Two' at the Venice Film Festival has always been my dream," Costner stated in a statement. "They support a director's vision and believe that the two films work well together, as seen by their decision to screen 'Chapter One' earlier in the day and host the world premiere of 'Chapter Two' that evening. I owe Alberto Barbera a debt of gratitude for his bravery and vision in taking us on this cinematic adventure.

"It is a great pleasure and honor to host the world premiere of 'Horizon: An American Saga,' alongside its chapter one," Barbera continued. This last-minute addition to the Venice Film Festival's schedule honors the visionary endeavor of a legendary actor and director who devoted his life to the epic reconstruction of the years that were critical to the nation's founding, delving beneath the surface of mythology to uncover authenticity that could bring back a fragment of history in all of its contradictory and complicated reality.

"Instead of unfurling a Western saga in a solid powerful arc, Costner serves up three hours of anecdotes, cross-cutting among groups of characters, dropping in on situations that are dropped just as quickly, taking a skittery overview of life on the range, and asking the audience, in many cases, to stitch together the backstory of what they're seeing," chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in Variety's review of the first movie.

The 81st Venice Film Festival takes place from August 28 to September 7.
