Spent a warm summer morning kayaking on Darby Creek that flows through John Heinz Wildlife Refuge. The lagoon-like freshwater creek opens up into a wide marsh channel before meeting the Delaware River.
This is easy kayaking conditions, apart from a tide that drains the creek dry. You do not want to find yourself stranded on a mud flat at low tide for a good couple of hours.
The Refuge is America's first Urban Refuge established in 1972 for the purpose of preserving a natural area known as Tinicum marsh. The refuge is bordered by Philadelphia International Airport, Interstate highway and housing communities, but once you walk the refuge paths or kayak Darby Creek the grinding sounds of urban life disappear. It is a precious oasis of modern living and a crucial sanctuary for fish, wildlife and plants.
With this video I tried to capture the serenity that can be found kayaking in the marshland and also highlight the impact of discarded trash within the Refuge.
