Cricut Maker 3 and Explore 3 compared to Silhouette Cameo 4 - What machine will I keep or purchase?
Cricut released the Maker 3 and Cricut Explore 3 as upgrades to their existing Maker and Explore Air 2 machines.
The deets:
Maker 3
2x faster than predecessor
Cuts 300 types of materials
Can do matless cutting with Cricut smart materials
Can cut up to 12 feet of material using a sold separately roller adapter.
Uses same tools as Maker.
Still blue tooth enabled
Cuts 2.4mm thickness
Explore 3
2x faster than predecessor
Cuts 100 + types of materials
Matless cutting with Cricut smart material
Cuts up to 12 feet with Smart Materials, roll holder sold separately.
Cricut software was recently updated to include kerning and offset cutting.
Cameo 4
Faster than predecessor
Cuts 300 + materials
Matless cutting with materials with backing, and a pop out feature for cardstock.
Built-in roller for feeding longer lengths of material
Cuts up to 60 feet in length for certain materials
Print and cut ability
Comes in three sizes of cutting area, 12 inch, 15 inch and a whopping 2 feet
Cuts up to 3mm thickness
Bluetooth connectivity.
Silhouette software can upload and download designs, comes standard with extremely precise offset cutting, kiss cutting and kerning.
There is a gulf of difference between the two machines and their respective software. The key point for me is the Cricut machines simply work. The software is far more beginner friendly with less granular control in some aspects, however the latest updates have the potential getting to the point of level setting with Silhouette.
Working with Silhouette machines, the software offers more versatility, especially with cutting settings and upload/download capabilities. However, my experience with the Silhouette Cameo 4 is not as reliable as my Cricut Joy.
In fairness, I believe the Cameo 4 I own is a lemon and plan on replacing it. I am contemplating picking up the Cricut Explore 3 because I already am in the Cricut ecosystem, and frankly, I want a reliable cutting machine.
