When John excitedly tells his parents he’s being considered as Hal’s replacement, only to realize Hal already broke the news himself, Hal pulls John aside outside and lets him have it: “Honestly, I don’t give a flying f*** what you’re hoping for. I’m guessing it’s this ring right here. And I don’t need a fin’ sidekick, and I don’t want a fin’ backup. And the only way you’re going to get this ring is over my dead f***in’ body. We’ll start training Monday morning. Looking forward to it, Junior.” That is such a perfect, brutal way to establish their dynamic right out of the gate.
I loved getting to see John’s full origin in this episode too. We learn the ring actually found his father, John Stewart Sr., first, but he admitted he was afraid, so it moved on. His mother Bernadette then took it upon herself to train John’s fearlessness from childhood, all so he could eventually earn this exact opportunity. It’s such a heartbreaking, layered reframing of his backstory. And Hal definitely ain’t playing when it comes to holding onto that ring.
