Abstract: When I applied for a job in 2023 using a carefully handcrafted resume, my application was ruthlessly rejected by an AI-algorithm. This personal setback underscored the dilemma millions are facing in the modern job market: choosing between sending out generic applications, which rarely capture attention, or investing countless hours in customized documents, only to have them dismissed by a machine.
Shiny came to my rescue, alongside GPT-3.5. I invested some days and developed an R-Shiny App, which sets job applicants back on equal terms with recruiting firms. This App allows users to copy-paste a job description, and with the simple click of a button, it leverages the GPT-3.5 API via Python to generate a tailored version of their resume and a personalized motivation letter, which are then printed as visually appealing pdf documents. The user also has the option to manually correct the documents. Moreover, it neatly organizes the different versions of resumes in multiple languages. This project is a lighthouse example of R-Shiny’s interoperability, including the key technologies R-Shiny, Python's reticulate, GPT API and R Markdown/Vitae/Latex.
The result speaks for itself. It enabled me to dispatch 70 personalized job applications within a few hours, which resulted in numerous job offers. I am thrilled to share this Web App, as well as the source-code, with the community, hoping that many can reap the same benefit as I did. This project is a great example of how real-world problems can be solved quickly by R-Shiny.
