Abstract: We’ve all been there. We have a R/Shiny app or a series of RScripts everyone has worked together on. There is tons of processing, lots of data flows, and so much wrangling, and there is no way to share it. Sure, a package can be made and used, but that’s a lot of maintenance and then, you have to get people to install it, which seems more difficult in practice than it sounds in theory. Enter: Plumber API. Plumber is a versatile package that gives you easy ways to transform existing code, with minimal changes, into an API. In this workshop, we will go through it all and get our hands dirty. There may be leaks that we’ll have to fix. This is a few hours of heavy DIY work. You will walk away with the knowledge of the basics of APIs, response codes, and the whole shebang, of how to make Plumber APIs from existing code, how to add authentication to it, and everything in between. We will also discuss deployment options, and if time allows, deploy one ourselves.
The good part about this session is that all you need will be provided to you but here is a checklist, just in case, so that you are ready to follow along:
Please ensure you are ready with any IDE (RStudio, VSCode, Positron et al.) of your choice installed. The session will use RStudio.
Do make sure you have a working internet connection (ha!) to download packages on the fly. If you feel bandwidth can be an issue, ensure that you have the latest versions of R, plumber and tidyverse. As of the writing of this document:
R is at 4.4.3
plumber is at 1.3.0
tidyverse is at 2.0.0
Besides this, there is nothing to worry about. You will be provided with a GitHub repository before the session begins. If you’re not familiar with Git, rest assured, we will fetch it together and start from scratch.
Also, bring all your questions, your curiosity, and an open mind!
