Happy Halloween everyone. I hope you have a spooktacular weekend full of good wholesome fun. Autumn is settling in here in Japan and the leaves will soon be showing us their best colours. While Ghost stories are generally reserved for summer here in the far east I wanted to start doing a regular Halloween horror video.

My original idea of doing the Evil Within was derailed however when Avalanche Jared’s videos finally got me to try the first Fatal Frame (Project Zero in the UK) and I was not only hooked by the gameplay but also found myself stumbling down a folklore rabbit hole of sorts. And I love mythology and folklore.

So for the 2024 Halloween season I wanted to explore the third pillar of the big three Japanese horror game series. Let's head back to a world of fixed camera angles, tank controls and high risk vs reward combat while we control a character who really isn’t dressed or trained to deal with a Leon Kennedy level threat. We are going to explore the fabled Himuro mansion and fight its powerful Onryu ghosts. And while we’re at it, we’ll explore how this game story, conjured in the mind of a very interesting director, somehow got transformed into an actual urban legend and also explore how this isn’t the first time this has happened.

So let’s dive into some real Japanese Kaidan (ghost stories) and get to grips with a Playstation 2 survival horror classic. Let’s grab our camera obscura and snap some ghosts and maybe see if we can’t save a few damned souls in the process.
