On July 4, 1910, in Reno, Nevada, Jack Johnson, the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, defended his title against the former undefeated champion James J. Jeffries in what became one of the most historic fights in boxing history.
Dubbed the “Fight of the Century”, the bout carried enormous social and racial significance in early 20th-century America. Jeffries came out of retirement, pushed as the “Great White Hope” to reclaim the title for white America, while Johnson sought to solidify his legacy as the first Black heavyweight champion.
