Today marks the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, which began on February 19, 1945. After more than a month of intense fighting, the battle concluded with the capture of the island on March 26, 1945.
American casualties were staggering, with 6,821 killed in action and 19,217 wounded. Of the approximately 20,933 Japanese troops defending the island, only 216 were taken prisoner; the rest were killed in action or listed as missing in action.
